Annecy reads as a succession of distinctly different neighbourhoods, sometimes separated by just a few hundred metres. The old town, crossed by the Thiou canals and dominated by the château, offers apartments in period buildings, within walking distance of markets, arcaded streets and the Palais de l’Isle. By the water, the Pâquier esplanade and the Jardins de l’Europe open onto the Imperial beach, minutes from the centre. Annecy-le-Vieux, more residential, overlooks Albigny beach, the largest on the lake. The eastern shore, Veyrier-du-Lac, Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Talloires, lines properties facing the water. The western shore, from Sevrier to Duingt, runs alongside the green way and looks out towards the facing cliffs.
The choice hinges less on distance than on the rhythm you seek. An old-town apartment suits those who wish to dine on foot and live among the canals. A villa with a swimming pool in the heights of Veyrier-du-Lac or Menthon-Saint-Bernard offers views across the entire large lake and the quiet of an enclosed garden. Talloires, its bay and abbey, remain the most sought-after address on the eastern shore. Duingt, on its peninsula, marks the boundary between the small and large lake, in a wilder atmosphere. Clear water at the foot of a medieval town
Annecy owes its reputation to a rare accord: a lake of exceptional purity, a perfectly preserved old town, and mountains that plunge straight into the water.
The town was built around the Thiou, the lake’s outlet, whose channels once turned the wheels of workshops and mills. On its rocky islet, the Palais de l’Isle, its oldest sections dating to the 12th century, served in turn as a stronghold, prison and courthouse before being listed as a historic monument in 1900. The château, perched on its spur, was the residence of the Counts of Geneva. The canals, flower-decked railings and coloured façades earned Annecy its epithet the Venice of the Alps, and the Pont des Amours, spanning the Vassé canal, its enduring legend.
The lake itself owes its clarity to a clean-up initiative begun in the mid-20th century, when the surrounding communities stopped discharging sewage into it: today it is considered one of Europe’s purest. All around, the landscape provides the backdrop, with the Semnoz on the western shore, the Dents de Lanfon and Tournette to the east, and the Roc de Chère nature reserve, 68 hectares of protected forest between Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Talloires. Summer in the water, off-season on the trails
The heart of summer
From June to September, life moves entirely to the water’s edge. You swim at Albigny, the lake’s largest beach with 300 metres of grassy shoreline and mature trees, or at the Imperial, reached from the centre by walking along the Pâquier. The rest unfolds on the water: paddleboarding on still mornings, unlicensed electric boats to reach coves on the eastern shore, diving from a pontoon. Evenings linger on terraces, in the old town or along village quays.
Off-season
Spring and autumn return Annecy to its inhabitants. It is the season for cycling around the lake, 40km including a long section of green way laid on the former railway line of the western shore, and for trails: the Roc de Chère, the ridges of the Semnoz, the balconies of the Forclaz pass above Montmin, from where paragliders launch as they do from Planfait above Talloires. October light on the old town’s façades, markets and Savoyard tables provide the rest.

Which area to choose around Lake Annecy?
Three approaches coexist. Annecy town centre and its old town for everything within walking distance, markets, restaurants and the Imperial beach included. The eastern shore, from Veyrier-du-Lac to Talloires via Menthon-Saint-Bernard, for villas overlooking the large lake. The western shore, from Sevrier to Duingt, for the green way, family beaches and a quieter atmosphere. Allow roughly fifteen kilometres between Annecy and Talloires, and 40km for the complete circuit of the lake.
Can you rent a house with a swimming pool or lake access?
Both exist, but these are the most sought-after properties and book early. Villas with swimming pools are concentrated in the heights of both shores, at Veyrier-du-Lac, Menthon-Saint-Bernard, Talloires or Saint-Jorioz. Private lake access, pontoons or beaches reserved for residents, are rarer and situated at water level. What is the best time for a stay in Annecy?
July and August for swimming and lake activities, with strong visitor numbers and properties booked well in advance. June and September offer pleasantly warm water, mild evenings and far fewer crowds: often the best compromise. Spring and autumn suit active stays, cycling, hiking and heritage, in a town returned to its natural rhythm.
