For beach days, settle near Pampelonne, in the neighbouring commune of Ramatuelle, or in the hilltop villages of Gassin and Ramatuelle, quieter and facing the sunset. A fishing village turned legend
Saint-Tropez contains a paradox: a tiny harbour, known throughout the world, which has never ceased to be a village.
Long a simple fishing port founded by Genoese sailors, Saint-Tropez changed its destiny at the end of the nineteenth century, when Paul Signac anchored here in 1892 and attracted an entire generation of painters, from Matisse to Marquet. The Musée de l’Annonciade, housed in a former chapel facing the port, holds the memory of this pointillist and Fauvist adventure. Writers and artists, from Colette to figures of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, later made the village their summer refuge.
In 1956, cinema revealed the resort to the entire world and fixed its image of freedom and carefree living for ever. Yet behind the myth, the peninsula has kept its true face: the Côtes de Provence vineyards descending towards the sea, the wild headlands, villages of stone such as Gassin, listed among France’s Most Beautiful Villages, and the gentleness of a light that belongs to it alone. Blazing summer, quieter shoulder seasons
The height of summer
From June to September, the peninsula lives to the rhythm of the sea. The vast beach at Pampelonne stretches nearly 4.7km of sand between Cap Pinet and Cap Camarat, with its beach clubs and public accesses set against the vineyards. To the south, the coves of Cap Camarat and Cap Taillat, Escalet and Bonne Terrasse, reward those who reach them on foot with turquoise waters. In the evening, the port, Place des Lices and the tables of the old town keep the day alive late into the night.
Shoulder seasons
In spring and autumn, Saint-Tropez regains its calm. This is the ideal season to walk the coastal path, from Cap Camarat, whose lighthouse ranks among the highest in France, to the unspoilt headlands of the south. One then visits the hilltop villages of Gassin and Ramatuelle, steps into the wine estates of the peninsula, and enjoys the terraces and markets without summer crowds. The light is softer, the tables more peaceful, and the sea remains beautiful.

Which neighbourhood to choose in Saint-Tropez?
It depends on your stay. For activity on foot, choose the port, the old town or the surroundings of Place des Lices. For privacy and a swimming pool, villas in the pine forests of the peninsula are preferable. For the beach, move closer to Pampelonne on the Ramatuelle side, and for calm and panoramas, the hilltop villages of Gassin and Ramatuelle.
Are there villas with a swimming pool and easy access to beaches?
Yes. The peninsula has numerous villas with swimming pool and garden, often nestled in pine forests a few minutes from Pampelonne. The large beaches are accessible by car, whilst the wild coves of Cap Camarat and Cap Taillat can be reached via the coastal path on foot. What is the best time for a stay in Saint-Tropez?
Summer, from June to September, offers full seaside life: swimming, beaches, the animated port and long evenings. Spring and autumn are gentler and more confidential, perfect for the coastal path, villages of the hinterland and tables without queues. July and August remain the most visited months.
