Renting in Bonifacio

Rent a villa or apartment in Bonifacio with AEC Collection

Bonifacio reads in three tiers. At the very top, the walled city: a Genoese citadel perched on a promontory of white limestone, narrow streets, tall houses pressed against the ramparts, and the marine cemetery with its white chapels lined up facing the sea. Below, the Marine, a port set deep within a calanque that one might easily mistake for a fjord: the quays, fishing boats, terraces, and the life of the evening. Around it, the Bonifacio countryside, a plateau of low maquis descending to the sea through Piantarella, Sperone and the Gulf of Santa Manza, then opening further north onto Rondinara bay with its shell-shaped curve.

The choice comes quickly, depending on how you wish to spend your days. An apartment in the upper city, to walk to the King of Aragon’s Staircase and the bastions, and return to dinner without taking the car again. A villa with pool near Sperone or Piantarella, for calm, expansive terraces and quick access to the white sands of Petit and Grand Sperone, within the natural reserve of the Mouths of Bonifacio. A pied-à-terre near the Marine, for departures by sea towards the Lavezzi. Or the hinterland, towards the vineyards of Figari, when seeking shade, space and silence a few kilometres from the coast. Tell us how you spend your holidays, we guide you towards the right neighbourhood. Stays are booked by the week, the calendar and availability shown are actual, and booking is done online.

The spirit of Bonifacio

A city that stands on the cliff

Bonifacio is unlike anything else in the Mediterranean: a fortified city suspended above the void, at the far south of Corsica, with Sardinia across the water.

Here, limestone is everything. It forms the white bar streaked by wind and salt, it supports houses built at the edge of the precipice, it carves the caves that one truly understands only from the sea. Refounded in the ninth century, the city was shaped by Genoa, which made it a stronghold facing the strait: from there come the ramparts, the walled upper city and the King of Aragon’s Staircase, 187 steps carved into the rock down to the sea, which legend attributes to a fifteenth-century siege and reason to months of labour.

Below, the Marine keeps the rhythm of a port, between fishing and sailing. To the south, the Pertusato path follows the cliff edge to the lighthouse, over 100 metres above the water, with views reaching the Sardinian coast. Offshore, the granite archipelago of Lavezzi and Cavallo with its smooth slabs and clear waters sits within a natural reserve protecting the entire strait. Our villas and apartments are selected for their location, views and peaceful surroundings, so that the citadel, coves and open sea remain within immediate reach.

Through the season

Summer facing the sea, shoulder season for the city

High summer

July and August revolve around the water. Days begin early: a sea trip to the Lavezzi, or a morning in Rondinara before the crowds. They continue on the white sands of Sperone and Piantarella, a playground for water sports when the westerly wind picks up. Petit Sperone is worth the walk, which keeps its lagoon-like character. The citadel is reserved for late afternoon, when the stone turns golden, before dinner on the Marine quays.

Shoulder season

May, June, September and October return the city to itself. The sea remains pleasant, the maquis smells of rockrose and mastic, and the coastal paths can finally be walked without the heat: the cliff edge towards the Pertusato lighthouse, the Gulf of Santa Manza and its sheltered waters, the coves that summer keeps confidential. It is also the season for the vineyards of Figari, for Sperone golf course set on the water’s edge, and for tables you can book without waiting weeks in advance, from port cuisine to haute gastronomy, with Finestra by Italo Bassi, Bonifacio’s first Michelin-starred restaurant, whose great bay overlooks the port.

Frequently asked questions

Renting in Bonifacio: what we are asked

Upper city, Marine or countryside: which area to choose?

The upper city to live in the citadel and do everything on foot, accepting narrow access and limited parking. The Marine to be on the port, near restaurants and sea departures. The Bonifacio countryside, towards Sperone, Piantarella or Santa Manza, for a villa in calm surroundings, with pool and open views, though you will then need a car.

Where to find a villa with pool and easy beach access?

On the plateau to the south-east of the city, towards Sperone and Piantarella: this is the area of large estates, a few minutes from the white sand beaches and the golf course. The Gulf of Santa Manza, more sheltered from the westerly wind, offers houses facing calm sea. For Rondinara bay, allow about twenty kilometres on the Porto-Vecchio road.

What is the best time for a stay in Bonifacio?

July and August for full beach life, sea trips and evenings on the port, though with high visitor numbers and weeks booking early. June and September offer the best balance: warm sea, long light, an accessible citadel. May and October suit stays focused on walking, heritage and dining.
