Grand Sperone Beach (Bonifacio): 20 minutes' walk to the wildest shore in the south

The setting: golf course, Roman ruins and the Lavezzi Islands in view

Grand Sperone sits on the Sperone peninsula, the south-eastern tip of Corsica, where the coastline faces directly towards Sardinia and the Lavezzi Islands. On clear days, the Lavezzi archipelago is visible 7km to the south, beyond which lies the Sardinian coast.

The beach is a crescent of very fine white sand, bordered by translucent turquoise water that slopes very gently. The sand, uncommonly white for Corsica, gives it an unapologetically “tropical” character.

Behind the beach lies wild maquis and the fairway of Golf de Sperone (designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, among France’s most prestigious courses). This coexistence of maquis, golf course and beach is one of the site’s defining characteristics.

Access: 20 to 30 minutes’ walk from Piantarella

No direct access by car: the final stretch of path lies within a protected zone. The standard route:

1. Arrive by car at the Piantarella beach car park, 7km from Bonifacio via the D258a.

2. Cross the Piantarella beach, more accessible but busier.

3. Pass the Piantarella Roman ruins (remains of a late-antiquity Roman villa, scant surface traces).

4. Cross the Petit Sperone cove, a smaller intermediate beach.

5. Follow the coastal path that skirts the golf course to Grand Sperone.

Allow 20 to 30 minutes’ walk depending on pace. No technical difficulty, but little shade: bring a hat and water, especially in summer.

No facilities on site

The beach is entirely unspoilt:

No restaurant, no beach bar, no café.

No toilets, no shower.

No drinking water.

No watersports equipment rental.

This necessitates simple logistics: bring everything with you (water, food, umbrella, mask), and take everything away (there are no bins either). This absence of development is central to the site’s preservation.

When to visit

The beach does see visitors in high season, but the “barrier” created by the 20-30 minute walk filters out some of the crowds:

Before 10am in peak summer, the beach is virtually your own.

June and the first half of September: water still warm, modest numbers of visitors, path passable without extreme heat.

May and late September: perfect walking conditions, water occasionally cool but swimmable.

Out of season: the beach remains accessible year-round, wild and deserted, favoured by walkers and photographers.

Precautions and nature reserve regulations

The beach lies within the Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve (established in 1999, one of the Mediterranean’s most significant). A few rules to observe:

No fires or barbecues.

No foraging in the maquis, no collection of shells or marine material.

Boat mooring in front of the beach is regulated; certain zones are prohibited.

Dogs are permitted on leads.

Strict compliance with reserve regulations is what guarantees the beach’s quality over the long term.

Combine with the Lavezzi Islands

From Bonifacio harbour, water taxis depart for the Lavezzi Islands, visible from Sperone. This is a complementary full-day excursion, allowing you to view the Sperone area from the sea and venture further into the same nature reserve.

Planning a stay in Bonifacio
