Nice reads by neighbourhood, and each offers a different stay. Vieux-Nice unfolds through a labyrinth of Italian-influenced streets: ochre facades, Baroque churches, and the cours Saleya where the flower market runs daily, replaced by antiques on Mondays. It is the choice of those who want to walk everywhere and return late. Just above, the Château hill dominates the Baie des Anges at 92m and offers one of the finest views in the city. Facing the water, the Promenade des Anglais stretches nearly 7km of public and private pebble beaches in grey and white. Set back slightly, the Carré d’Or gathers the finest addresses of the centre within a few streets of the waterfront: the urbane and comfortable option, for a quality apartment with the sea at the end of the street.

The heights tell another story. Cimiez, once a retreat of European aristocracy, aligns broad avenues bordered by pines and palms, grand town houses and villas set in gardens. Here you will find the Roman site of Cemenelum, its amphitheatre and thermal complexes, the Matisse Museum housed in the Villa of the Arenas and, below, the national Marc Chagall Museum: this is the neighbourhood of calm and heritage, removed from the bustle yet not far from it. To the east, Mont-Boron overlooks the bay with its sea-view villas, an 80-hectare forest park and 11km of trails leading to the Fort of Mont Alban (220m), from where you can see the Baie des Anges on one side and the Villefranche roads on the other.
