Chamonix is unlike any other valley in the Alps. At 1035m altitude, at the foot of Mont-Blanc (4806m), the world capital of mountaineering lives vertically in summer: you take a cable car to 3842m as easily as elsewhere you take a bus, a rack railway leads to France’s largest glacier, and the Compagnie des guides, founded in 1821, takes its rope teams to the summits each morning. Yet Chamonix summers are not reserved for mountaineers: sunny balconies, high-altitude lakes, larch forests and animated terraces make for a season apart, greener and gentler than one might imagine.
Chamonix in summer: practical information

High mountains within cable-car reach
This is Chamonix’s unique privilege: to approach very high mountains without an ice axe. The Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you to 3842m in less than 20 minutes, facing Mont-Blanc, with a 360-degree panorama over the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. In summer, you book your slot in advance and go early: the air is clearest in the morning, and the high-altitude terraces less crowded.
The other great classic departs from the town centre station: the red Montenvers train, a rack railway, climbs in 20 minutes to the balcony of the Mer de Glace, France’s largest glacier. At the height of summer, in July and August, it runs daily (2027 timetables to follow), and the visit extends into the ice cave recut each year into the glacier. The AEC tip. Ascend the Aiguille du Midi at first light and save the Montenvers for late afternoon: you’ll sidestep the crowds at both sites in a single day, and the evening light on the Mer de Glace is finest then.
Balconies, lakes and trails
Facing the Mont-Blanc massif, the southern balconies of Brévent and Flégère offer the valley’s finest panoramic trails, reached by cable car then on foot. The signature hike departs from Flégère towards Lac Blanc (2352m), an altitude mirror where the Drus and Grandes Jorasses are reflected. On the Vallorcine side, the Balme domain unfolds gentler alpine meadows, perfect for family walking, extended by our Balme domain guide. Chamonix in summer is surprisingly accessible to children. Merlet park, high above Les Houches, lets ibex, chamois and marmots roam semi-freely before the Mont-Blanc massif. At Les Planards, a stone’s throw from the centre, the rail luge drops 1300m of turns and spirals from age 3. The Montenvers train remains the quintessential family excursion, ice cave included, and the trails of the Balme domain, on the Vallorcine side, offer gentle alpine meadows that small legs can follow with ease.
The summer highlights
Two key moments punctuate the 2027 season. From 26 to 31 July, the CosmoJazz Festival returns: free concerts performed at altitude, at the summit of the Aiguille du Midi, at Planpraz, Flégère or lakeside at Lac des Chavants, in settings no concert hall can offer. In late August, the valley becomes the centre of the trail-running world with UTMB week: 174km around Mont-Blanc for the main race, tens of thousands of visitors and a world-cup final atmosphere in the streets. When to come, how to get there
From mid-June to mid-September, all summer lifts operate and high-altitude trails are clear. July and August concentrate the bustle and major events; September offers quieter trails and golden light on the glaciers. Where to stay
Chamonix town centre puts terraces, station and cable cars within arm’s reach, in a proper mountain town that thrives year-round. Les Praz, at the foot of Flégère and its golf course, offers the calm of an upmarket hamlet five minutes from the centre. Argentière, higher in the valley, breathes authentic mountain character before the Grands Montets.
