Chamonix is like no other Alpine valley. At 1035m altitude, at the foot of Mont-Blanc (4806m), the world capital of mountaineering lives the summer vertically: one takes a cable car to 3842m as one would elsewhere take a bus, a rack railway leads to France’s largest glacier, and the Compagnie des guides, founded in 1821, takes its rope teams each morning towards the summits. Yet Chamonix summers are not reserved for alpinists: sunny balconies, alpine lakes, larch forests and lively terraces make for a season apart, greener and gentler than one might imagine.

High mountains within cable car reach
This is Chamonix’s unique privilege: to approach very high mountains without an ice axe. The Aiguille du Midi cable car reaches 3842m in under 20 minutes, facing Mont-Blanc, with a 360-degree panorama over the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. In summer, one books one’s time slot in advance and goes early: the air is clearest in the morning, and the high-altitude terraces less crowded.
The other great classic departs from the town-centre station: the red Montenvers train, a rack railway, climbs in 20 minutes to the balcony of the Mer de Glace, France’s largest glacier. The AEC tip. Go up to the Aiguille du Midi first thing and save the Montenvers for late afternoon: you’ll avoid the peak crowds at both sites on the same day, and the evening light on the Mer de Glace is at its finest.
Balconies, lakes and trails
Facing the Mont-Blanc massif, the southern balconies of Brévent and Flégère offer the valley’s finest panoramic trails, accessible by cable car then on foot. The signature walk departs from the Flégère towards Lac Blanc (2352m), an alpine mirror reflecting the Drus and Grandes Jorasses. On the Vallorcine side, the Balme domain unfolds gentler pastures, perfect for family walks, extended by our Balme domain guide. Chamonix in summer is surprisingly accessible to children. The Parc de Merlet, on the heights above Les Houches, lets ibex, chamois and marmots roam semi-freely facing the Mont-Blanc massif. At the Planards, minutes from the centre, a rail luge swoops down 1300m of curves and spirals from age 3. The Montenvers train remains the quintessential family excursion, ice cave included, and the trails in the Balme domain, on the Vallorcine side, offer gentle pastures where young legs have no trouble keeping pace.
Summer’s great events
Two highlights structure the 2026 season. From 20 to 25 July, the CosmoJazz Festival celebrates its 16th edition: free concerts held at altitude, at the summit of Aiguille du Midi, at Planpraz, at Flégère or beside Lac des Chavants, in settings no concert hall could offer. In late August, the valley becomes the centre of the trail-running world with UTMB week: 174km around Mont-Blanc for the main race, tens of thousands of visitors and an atmosphere like a world cup final in the streets. A stay during this week should be reserved well in advance.
When to come, how to get there
From mid-June to mid-September, all summer lift systems operate and high-altitude trails are clear. July and August concentrate activity and major events; September offers quieter trails and golden light on the glaciers.
