Saint-Raphaël stretches across nearly 36km of coastline, from the urban seafront to the last coves before the Alpes-Maritimes. The town centre occupies just a few streets, between the old town, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Victoire and the Promenade des Bains: sandy beaches, Provençal market, terraces of the Old Harbour and boats of the Santa Lucia port. Eastwards, Boulouris unfolds a series of small beaches carved into coves by rocky outcrops, in a residential quarter planted with pines. Further on, Dramont and Agay give way to the Estérel: red rock, clear water, the Golden Island and its square tower on the horizon. On the heights, Valescure is another world, one of villas beneath the pinewood and a golf course opened in 1895 by British winter residents.
Choosing a neighbourhood often comes down to one simple question: do you want to walk home from dinner, or hear only cicadas? An apartment with sea views, between the town centre and Santa Lucia port, puts the beach and shops within a few minutes’ walk, which changes everything with children or without a car. Where the red Estérel meets the sea
A quiet coastal town, backed by a massif that has remained wild: on the Côte d’Azur, this marriage has become rare.
Saint-Raphaël was a fishing village when the railway arrived in 1864. Writer Alphonse Karr settled there the following year and drew artists and musicians in his wake, among them Charles Gounod. Then came Félix Martin, an engineer who became mayor from 1878 to 1894, and who built the casino, the Promenade des Bains and the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Victoire, erected between 1882 and 1889 in a striking Romanesque-Byzantine style. Belle Époque villas followed. This heritage is still legible in the facades along the seafront and in the layout of Valescure, where British visitors who came to recover their health left behind a golf course that became the oldest in Var.
The setting itself is the work of the Estérel. The porphyry massif pushes its final spurs down to the sea and sculpts a coast of tiny calanques traced by the Golden Corniche towards Cannes. One climbs to the peak of Cap Roux for the panorama, sails round Cap Dramont and its semaphore, descends to the Landing Beach, where Allied troops came ashore on 15 August 1944. A few kilometres away, Fréjus preserves its first-century amphitheatre and an episcopal city whose octagonal baptistery ranks among the oldest in France. Summer in the coves, autumn on the trails
High summer
From June to September, the day revolves around the water: the sand of the town centre and Agay roadstead for long family days, the coves of Boulouris and Camp Long for quiet swimming, Landing Beach for its view of the Golden Island. The red rock and carved seabed make snorkelling more rewarding than elsewhere, and a boat trip remains the best way to reach the calanques of the Golden Corniche. In the evening, the town is lived on foot, from the morning market to the fish restaurants of the Old Harbour.
Shoulder season
In spring and autumn, Saint-Raphaël returns to its town rhythm. The sea stays warm well after the end of August, the beaches empty out, and the Estérel becomes accessible all day: coastal path from Santa Lucia port to the Baumette lighthouse, Cap Dramont loop, ascent to Cap Roux peak. It is also the golf season in Valescure and the time for visits that the July heat discourages, from the Fréjus amphitheatre and episcopal city to the hilltop villages of the Var hinterland.

The town centre and seafront to do everything on foot, sandy beaches, market and Old Harbour within immediate reach. Boulouris for a shaded villa neighbourhood, with its string of small beaches. Valescure, on the heights, for a villa with pool beneath the pines, near the golf course, the coast a few minutes’ drive away. Dramont and Agay to live as close as possible to the coves and Estérel, in a wilder setting.
Where are the most beautiful coves, and can they be reached on foot?
The most spectacular are to the east, around Dramont and Agay, where red rocks cut up the coast: Landing Beach facing the Golden Island, Camp Long cove ringed with ochre rocks, Agay roadstead for a large sheltered beach. The marked coastal path starts from Santa Lucia port and reaches Baumette lighthouse via Boulouris and Dramont: from a property located on this stretch, several coves can be reached on foot.
What is the best time for a stay in Saint-Raphaël?
July and August for peak seaside season, provided you book early. June and September offer the best compromise: the sea is warm, the coves are far quieter, restaurants remain open. Spring and autumn suit those who come first for the Estérel, coastal hiking, golf and Fréjus heritage.
