Rent a chalet or apartment in Zermatt with AEC Collection
Zermatt sits in a narrow valley at 1,620m, organised along a single axis that runs from the railway station up to the head of the valley. The centre, around Bahnhofstrasse, concentrates the shops, restaurants and evening activity, the choice for those who want everything within walking distance, including the lifts. Just beyond, climbing the Vispa, Hinterdorf preserves the village as it was before tourism: darkened mazots set on stone pilotis, tightly clustered barns, the Church of Saint Maurice and the graveyard of the first English alpinists. You can stay here in surprising quiet, just tens of metres from the main street.
To the south, on an elevated terrace, Winkelmatten is the residential quarter: families, groups, spacious properties, a twenty-minute walk from the centre and direct access to the Furi departure point, thus to the Schwarzsee and glacier. Those who ski Sunnegga and the Rothorn first prefer the other end of the village, near the funicular. The mountain hamlets, Findeln, Zmutt, Blatten, Zum See, are reached on foot or by ski, for their old raccards and terraces. A car-free village, a mountain in the line of sight
No cars come up here, and at the end of the main street stands the Matterhorn.
The road ends at Täsch, 5km below, where you leave your car at the terminal for a train that reaches the village in 12 minutes. Zermatt has been car-free since the 1930s, and this longstanding decision explains nearly everything about its atmosphere: the ambient sound is that of a stream and small electric vehicles bringing up luggage. The village was a hamlet of farmers until the British came for the peaks. Alexander Seiler opened the Hotel Monte Rosa there in 1855, and on 14 July 1865 Edward Whymper signed off from Zermatt the first ascent of the Matterhorn, an expedition whose tragic descent established the place’s reputation.
One hundred and sixty years later, mountaineering has not left the streets: ropes still depart for the Hörnli hut and the ridge leading to the summit. Hinterdorf, meanwhile, has not moved, and wood-ring dating has shown that some structures date from the 1380s, well before the barns of the 16th and 18th centuries that make up the bulk of the quarter. An intact Valais village, a perfect mountain at the end of every perspective: Zermatt has no equivalent. Two seasons, one mountain always in view
Winter
The Matterhorn Ski Paradise unites 360km of pistes and 52 lifts between Switzerland and Italy, with a link to Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche for lunch on the other side of the border. Three sectors structure it: Sunnegga, Blauherd and the Rothorn for wide intermediate runs and learning areas; the Gornergrat for panoramic descents served by the rack railway; the Schwarzsee and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise for high altitude. The latter peaks at 3,883m, Europe’s highest cable-car station, with its ice palace carved beneath the glacier’s surface. In the evening, après-ski starts in the hamlets, notably at Findeln, where Chez Vrony serves Valais cuisine facing the Matterhorn.
Summer
Summer in Zermatt is first a matter of trails. The Five Lakes trail links Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee and Leisee, with the Matterhorn reflected in three of them: the signature walk, accessible as a family from Sunnegga. Higher up, the Gornergrat train, Europe’s highest open-air rack railway, climbs in about thirty minutes facing the Gorner Glacier and the Mont Rose massif, from where you descend on foot past Riffelsee. Twenty minutes from the centre, the Gorner Gorges can be walked on wooden footbridges suspended above the torrent. Add mountain biking, mountaineering from the Hörnli and summer skiing on the Théodule Glacier.

Winkelmatten, on the heights to the south, for families and groups seeking space and access to the Furi departure point. The north-east of the village if you ski Sunnegga and the Rothorn first.
How do you reach Zermatt, given the village is car-free?
The road ends at Täsch, 5km before the village. You leave your car at the terminal and take the train, which reaches Zermatt in about twelve minutes, or an authorised taxi. On arrival, everything is done on foot or by electric vehicle: plan for easily manoeuvrable luggage, and tell us if your accommodation is at height, in Winkelmatten for example.
Is Zermatt worth a stay in summer?
Entirely. The Five Lakes trail, the Gornergrat ascent, the Gorner Gorges and mountain-biking itineraries easily fill a week, not counting mountaineering from the Hörnli. Zermatt is also one of the few places in the Alps where you can ski in the height of summer, on the Théodule Glacier. The village takes on a slower rhythm than in winter.

What capacity for a family or group?
