Freeride capital, village at heart
Verbier holds a rare balance: the adrenaline of vast open spaces and the bearing of an international resort facing full south.
Long a mountain pasture hamlet in the Bagnes valley, Verbier only became a resort over the course of the twentieth century: skiing arrived in the 1920s, the road from Le Châble opened in 1935, the first lift in 1951. From this pastoral past, the village retains a human scale and generous sunshine, found again on the terraces of the Central Square, one of the oldest gathering places in the commune.
The rest is a worldwide reputation. Each late March, Xtreme Verbier, the finale of the Freeride World Tour, sends the best riders onto the vertiginous face of Bec des Rosses and has established the resort as an absolute reference for off-piste skiing since 1996. Here you encounter an international clientele, one of the most animated après-ski scenes in the Alps and an unwavering standard of service. Winter
Verbier opens the 4 Vallées, Switzerland’s most extensive entirely Swiss domain, nearly 410km of runs connecting Verbier, Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon. At the summit, Mont-Fort at 3330m unfolds a 360° panorama over the Matterhorn, Dent Blanche, Grand Combin and Mont-Blanc. Seven marked and secured off-piste itineraries, from Mont-Gelé to Mur de Chassoure via Vallon d’Arbi, delight freeriders, as the Central Square takes over as night falls.
Summer
When the fine season arrives, the mountain is walked and cycled: hiking trails towards Lac des Vaux at 2624m, mountain biking and bike park routes, excursions to the Mauvoisin dam at the end of the Bagnes valley. In July, Verbier Festival brings together leading names in classical music; in August, Verbier Bike Festival enlivens the slopes. The full southern aspect of the plateau is savoured unhurried, terrace in the sun.

Is Verbier only for experienced skiers?
No. Whilst Verbier owes its legend to freeride and Xtreme at Bec des Rosses, the 4 Vallées domain and its approximately 410km of runs welcome all levels, from the gentle slopes of Savoleyres to the great itineraries of Mont-Fort. Beginners and families find plenty of room here.
Is Verbier worth visiting in summer?
Absolutely. Once winter is past, Verbier becomes a base camp for hiking and mountain biking, with Lac des Vaux, the bike park and excursions to Mauvoisin. Verbier Festival, in July, adds each year one of the world’s most renowned classical music programmes, and the full southern terraces extend into the evenings.
