Valloire sits at the head of a Maurienne valley, reached via the Télégraphe pass at 1430m altitude. The village centre is dense, with shops and permanent residents: the baroque church in the middle of the town, shops, terraces, and the departure points for two cable cars, the Crêt de la Brive and the Sétaz, both within walking distance of most addresses. It is the neighbourhood for those who wish to do everything on foot and dine out in the evening.
Further up, on the Galibier road, the hamlet of Les Verneys forms a second, quieter and more open departure point, with its own chair lift and beginner slopes. It is here that the ice sculpture competition is held each winter, and from here many summer walks depart. Around the commune there are seventeen hamlets, among them Poingt Ravier, Bonnenuit and Les Granges, where stone houses and wooden barns have been preserved. You stay here for the peace and the sense of living in a village rather than a resort, accepting a short drive to the lift stations. The village first, the resort second
Valloire has retained its church, its hamlets and its residents, and happens to sit at the foot of two of the Alps’ most famous passes.
The village’s name appears in texts as early as 1038. Its landmark, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, dates from the seventeenth century: construction began in 1660 and the building was consecrated in 1682 by the Bishop of Maurienne, Hercule Berzetti. Sober on the outside, it reveals an interior decorated in the Savoyard Baroque style: the high altar retable, the choir vault in plasterwork, frescoes in the nave, all within a few steps of the shops.
For the rest of the year, Valloire lives from its mountain pastures and passes. The Tour de France has crossed the Galibier, at 2642m, since 1911, and the road passes through the village: cyclists arrive as soon as the pass reopens in early summer. In winter, it is sculptors. Each January, teams from around the world carve ice blocks on the Verneys plateau, then snow blocks of 50m³. A village that organises two ephemeral art competitions in the depths of winter is not a resort like any other. Our chalets and apartments are chosen for location, views and the quietness of the neighbourhood, with a preference for addresses within walking distance of the cable cars or ski-in terrain.
Two full seasons, no quiet period
Winter
The Galibier-Thabor domain connects Valloire to Valmeinier, with approximately 150km of pistes spread between 1400m and 2600m, across two distinct sectors. The Sétaz offers easy runs in the lower section and more technical slopes above. The Crey du Quart, more flowing, features mainly blue and red pistes and provides the link to Valmeinier. Beginners have their high-altitude plateaux, Thimel on the Sétaz side and the Séa on the Crey du Quart side, which matters when valley-bottom snow softens in spring. Access is via the Crêt de la Brive and Sétaz cable cars from the village, or the Verneys and Moulin Benjamin chair lifts from the upper valley. In the evening, après-ski takes place in the village bars, without excess.
Summer
In summer, Valloire becomes a crossroads of passes again. From the village, the Galibier climb is 18km at nearly 7% average gradient, and the Télégraphe, at 1566m, can be climbed from the other direction. The Galibier road only reopens in early summer and closes again in autumn. On foot, trails lead to the Lac des Cerces, at 2410m, beneath the walls of the massif of the same name, or follow the Three Lakes circuit from Plan Lachat. The bike park opens eight descent trails and routes designed for e-mountain biking, and the hamlets are connected by mountain pasture paths.

The centre for everything on foot: shops, restaurants and the two cable cars. Les Verneys for a quieter departure, with a chair lift and beginner slopes. Hamlets such as Poingt Ravier, Bonnenuit or Les Granges for peace and period buildings, with a car to reach the lift stations.
Is the domain really linked to Valmeinier?
Yes. Valloire and Valmeinier together form the Galibier-Thabor domain, with approximately 150km of pistes accessible with the same pass. The link is via the Crey du Quart sector: you can ski on the Valmeinier side during the day and return on the pistes, keeping an eye on the closing time of the linking lifts.
Is Valloire worth visiting in summer?
It is one of the few resorts where summer rivals winter. The Galibier and Télégraphe attract cyclists from all over Europe, trails climb to the Lac des Cerces and the Three Lakes, the bike park runs for descents and e-mountain biking. And the village remains open and inhabited outside season.
How does booking work?
Stays are booked by the week, Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday depending on the property. You choose your week on the calendar, send your request, and our team confirms availability. Booking is done online, with secure payment and the option to pay in instalments.
What capacity for a family or group?
Our selection ranges from apartments for a few to large chalets for a whole party. For a large group or a specific request, write to us: we also work with off-market properties.
How does arrival on site work?
You are welcomed by a local partner agency present on site, who conducts the check-in and provides you with practical information. For certain properties, autonomous arrival can be arranged on request.
