Sète sits on a narrow strip of land, wedged between the Mediterranean and the Étang de Thau, and this geography dictates everything, beginning with the choice of neighbourhood. The city centre organises itself around the Canal Royal and the quays, with terraces, markets and the fishing port auction within a few steps: this is the sector for those who want to experience the town, go out in the evening and return home on foot. Just above, the Quartier Haut lines its narrow streets along the side of Mont Saint-Clair, quieter, steeper, very proud of its character. The Corniche stretches along urban beaches, from the Lazaret to the Trois Digues, with the Théâtre de la Mer, a former military fort facing the sea, as its horizon. Further out, the Lido extends 12km of sand to Marseillan, lined with a cycle path. On the other side, Pointe Courte keeps its fishermen’s huts with their feet in the lagoon, a village within the city.
The choice is therefore less about an address than about a way to spend your days. For a villa with a swimming pool and long views, the slopes of Mont Saint-Clair and the Vallon offer the calm of the heights, the nearby pine forest and a panorama that encompasses the sea, the city and the lagoon. For a stay focussed on swimming, one heads towards the Corniche or the Lido beaches, where you can reach the sand in a few minutes. The singular island, between two waters
A town of fishermen and poets, built at the foot of a hill surrounded by water, which has never sought to resemble its neighbours.
Sète has grown around its port and has never broken with it. Trawlers return in the morning, the auction works a few metres from the terraces, and shellfish are eaten where they arrive. The town has kept its own vocabulary: the joutes languedociennes, where two boats launched against each other decide the fate of a jouster dressed in white, have been celebrated since 1666 and culminate at the Fête de la Saint-Louis, at the end of August. For the rest of the year, the tradition is passed down through the neighbourhoods as a family matter.
It is also a town of writing and imagery. Paul Valéry rests in the Cimetière Marin, on the heights, facing the port and the sea, this Saint-Charles cemetery renamed in 1945 in echo of his poem; the museum bearing his name sits just behind. Georges Brassens, a son of the town, is buried in the Cimetière Le Py, and a space is dedicated to him. The MIAM, international museum of modest arts, and the CRAC for contemporary art continue this tenacious vein, both popular and scholarly. Above all this, Mont Saint-Clair and the Pierres Blanches forest provide the vantage point that explains the town at a glance: the Mediterranean on one side, the Étang de Thau and its oyster beds on the other. Summer beaches, autumn light
The height of summer
July and August belong to the sea. Alternate between the urban beaches of the Corniche, easily accessible from town, and the vast stretches of the Lido towards Marseillan, where there is still space to be found by walking a little. Days are governed by the water: swimming early, paddling and sailing on the Étang de Thau, tasting oysters and shellfish from producers in Bouzigues, Mèze or Marseillan, then returning to the villa for the swimming pool during the hottest hours. In the evening, the quays come alive, the Théâtre de la Mer stages concerts facing the sea, and at the end of August the Fête de la Saint-Louis brings jousts and the whole town to the canal.
The shoulder season
From May to June and September to October, Sète finds its rhythm again. The sea remains pleasant in early autumn, beaches empty out, and you can linger on a terrace on the quays without waiting. This is the season for walking: trails through the Pierres Blanches forest and the climb to Mont Saint-Clair, the tour of the Pointe Courte huts, the Lido cycle path. It is also the time for museums and fish restaurants, when the auction first serves regulars, and for excursions around the Thau basin, towards the oyster farms and lagoon villages.

For town life, canals and restaurants, aim for the city centre around the Canal Royal or the Quartier Haut, more picturesque and quieter. For the beach within a few minutes, the Corniche is the most practical sector. For a villa with a swimming pool, calm and long views over the sea and lagoon, look at the slopes of Mont Saint-Clair and the Vallon. And for a setting apart, Pointe Courte and its huts on the lagoon’s edge maintain a village atmosphere.
Which beaches to favour, and can you stay nearby?
The beaches of the Corniche, Lazaret and Trois Digues are closest to town and are easily reached on foot or by car in a few minutes. The Lido, which stretches 12km to Marseillan, offers larger expanses of sand and a cycle path along the coast. What is the best time for a stay in Sète?
July and August for the peak season, swimming and major events, including the Fête de la Saint-Louis and its jousts at the end of the month. June and September offer the best balance: the sea is still pleasant, the heat is more bearable, the town is quieter. Spring and autumn suit stays focused on walking, heritage, museums and tastings around the Étang de Thau.
