Samoëns comprises an old centre and nine hamlets clinging to the slopes, each with its chapel. The heart of the village is organised around the Place du Gros Tilleul, the Grenette (the former grain hall) and the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption: this is where you will find shops, cafés and the Wednesday morning market. The Bérouze quarter, below, concentrates the departure of the Grand Massif Express cable car, the ice rink and ski schools. Higher up, Vercland overlooks the valley from its south-facing slope and has its own cable car, whilst Chantemerle, Les Allamands, Les Vallons and Mathonex retain the character of agricultural hamlets, a few minutes from the centre.
The choice depends on how you ski. To ski with your skis on your shoulder and come back to lunch in the village, aim for Bérouze or the immediate surroundings of the centre. For village life, its alleyways and year-round activity, stay on the square. For peace, light and views over the range, head up to Vercland or the hamlets on the slope, accepting a few minutes’ drive. Those who want to put on their skis at the door should look towards the Saix plateau, at 1600m, with direct access to the slopes. The village of stonemasons
Here, the mountains did not wait for skiing: the village existed long before the lifts, and it continues to thrive year-round.
The name is thought to come from the seven pastures that dominate the Giffre valley, and its inhabitants are still called the Septimontains. In the square, a lime tree planted in 1438 commemorates a judgment by the Duke Amédée VIII of Savoy confirming the people of Samoëns’ possession of their pastures: it is listed as a historical monument, and the square itself is a protected site. Nearby, the Grenette recalls the market granted by Amédée VI as far back as 1355, which made Samoëns the economic centre of the Haut-Giffre, and the baroque fountain of 1763 completes the picture.
The other signature of the place lies in stone. From the 14th to the 19th century, the stonemasons of the valley, the frahans, travelled far beyond Savoy to build, numerous enough here to found their Confraternity of the Four Crowned in 1659. Their trace can be seen on lintels, fountains, cemetery stelae and chapel doors in the hamlets. In 1906, Marie-Louise Cognacq-Jaÿ, a native of the place who became founder of La Samaritaine, gave the village the alpine botanical garden La Jaÿsinia, 3.7 hectares of tiered mountain collections around the ruins of Montanier château. Samoëns is one of five gateways to the Grand Massif, along with Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval: 265km of linked slopes, one of France’s largest domains, largely north-facing, which keeps the snow. From the village, the Grand Massif Express cable car climbs nearly 3km to the Saix plateau, at 1600m, and the Vercland cable car offers a second access point. The beginners’ sector of Samoëns 1600 ranks amongst the largest in Haute-Savoie, and the Cascades run, a blue piste of around 14km, descends from Flaine all the way to Sixt. In the evening, you find a village rather than a resort: open shops, an ice rink, and valley restaurants such as Le Lodge, which holds a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin guide, where the soupe châtrée, a local speciality made with bread and tomme cheese, features.
Summer
Summer is Samoëns’ second season, perhaps the most spectacular. Within minutes, the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval unfolds its walls and waterfalls, reputed to be the largest cirque in the Alps, with routes accessible to all from the valley floor. The Rouget waterfall drops over 80m in two stages. La Jaÿsinia is cool to visit, the Wednesday market fills the square, and the circuit of chapels can be walked or mountain-biked from one hamlet to another. Some of the lifts operate in summer to reach the pastures and, on clear days, there are views over the Mont-Blanc massif.

Can you ski the entire Grand Massif from Samoëns?
Yes. The Grand Massif Express connects the village to the Saix plateau, from where the domain opens towards Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon and Sixt. Samoëns also has a large beginners’ sector at 1600m, which allows families to separate by level without losing sight of one another.
Is Samoëns worth a summer stay?
Yes, it is even one of the few resorts where summer rivals winter. The Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval and the Rouget waterfall are within immediate reach, the La Jaÿsinia botanical garden and the heritage of the hamlets fill quieter days, and the village remains lively, with shops and market included.
How does booking work?
Stays are booked by the week, Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday depending on the property. You select your week on the calendar, send your request, and our team confirms availability. Booking is done online, with secure payment and the option to pay in instalments.
What capacity for a family or group?
