Saint-Rémy fits within a circle: the old town tightly woven in cobbled streets, and the ring of plane-tree-lined boulevards that encloses it. Within, everything is walkable. On Rue Hoche, where Nostradamus was born, the courtyards of former townhouses now house galleries, and the small squares have kept their fountains. On Wednesday mornings, the market spills from Place de la République onto Boulevards Marceau and Gambetta and Rue Lafayette: more than 150 stalls, and the day the town tells its story best. To the south, the road leads towards Glanum and Les Baux; as soon as the last houses fade, the countryside takes over, olive trees, vines, cypress hedges and long stone walls behind which the farmhouses hide.
The choice comes down to these two Saint-Rémys. An apartment or townhouse within the ring of boulevards or just behind, for those who want to walk home from market, dine on a terrace and only take the car for excursions. A farmhouse or villa with pool five or ten minutes away, on the plain roads or at the foot of the hills, for those who seek first and foremost silence, the shade of a plane tree and water of one’s own during the heat of the day. Higher towards the Alpilles, views open onto the limestone ridge; to the east and south, Eygalières, Maussane-les-Alpilles or Les Baux-de-Provence are reached in some twenty minutes. A small town that has seen twenty centuries pass
Here, Antiquity, olive trees and painting occupy the same landscape, and nobody makes a spectacle of it.
At the southern edge of town, on the Plateau of Antiquities, a triumphal arch and the mausoleum of the Julii have stood guard since Roman times; the site has been listed since 1937. Just behind stretches Glanum, an ancient city whose soil was Gallic, then Greek, then Roman, set against the foot of the hills. Opposite, the Monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole and its Romanesque cloister: Van Gogh stayed here from May 1889 to May 1890 and painted some 150 works, including Olive Trees, Irises and The Starry Night. It can be reached on foot from the centre, and that is the best way to understand the place.
The rest comes from the soil. Saint-Rémy belongs to the olive oil region of the Vallée des Baux-de-Provence, protected designation of origin since 1997, and the mills here are as numerous as the galleries. The commune lies within the Alpilles Regional Natural Park: 260 metres of elevation gain is enough, climbing to Rocher des Deux Trous, to see Mont Ventoux to the north and, on clear days, the Mediterranean to the south. Arles is some thirty kilometres away, Les Baux-de-Provence and the Carrières des Lumières, housed in former limestone quarries, twenty minutes away. The height of summer
July and August are lived early and late. Wednesday market from 8am, the Alpilles ridge before the rock heats up, then the pool and shade until late afternoon. Evenings stretch out on the boulevards and fountain-lined squares, and one keeps the Carrières des Lumières for the hottest hours: under the stone, it stays cool. This is the season to live outdoors from breakfast to nightfall, and when villas with pools go quickest.
The shoulder seasons
Spring and autumn are the true reward of the Alpilles. In April, May and June, the scrubland blooms, the paths through the Regional Natural Park can be walked without effort and Glanum can be visited almost alone. In September and October, the light descends, the mills turn for the new oil, the restaurants in the centre find their rhythm again and neighbouring villages open to walkers rather than tour buses. The mistral comes in episodes: it clears the sky and gives the stone that blue which Van Gogh came to find.
Renting in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: what we are asked
Is it better to stay in the centre of Saint-Rémy or in the countryside?
Both work, but for different kinds of stays. The centre, within the ring of boulevards or just at its edge, allows you to do everything on foot: the market, the galleries on Rue Hoche, restaurants, evening terraces. The countryside, five or ten minutes by car, offers space, a pool and silence, with a daily trip into town. With a family or group, the farmhouse with pool remains the most common choice; for two people, and outside the height of summer, a townhouse has considerable charm.
Can one rent a farmhouse or villa with a private pool?
This is the dominant form of rental in the Alpilles: restored farmhouses, country estates and contemporary villas, most often with a private pool, walled garden planted with olive trees and shaded terrace. Capacities range from a few people to large households. What is the best time for a stay in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence?
July and August for summer life, outdoor evenings and full use of the pool, with heat during the day and a lively town. May, June and September offer the best balance: long days, Alpilles paths in good condition, quiet ancient sites and countryside still green. October and early spring suit those who come for heritage, walking and dining more than bathing, provided you choose a well-heated property.
