Saint-Gervais cannot be contained in a single location. The commune stretches from the depths of the Arve valley to the summit of Mont-Blanc and is organised around four distinct living areas. Le Fayet, at 580m, houses the railway station, the thermal park and the departure point of the Mont-Blanc Tramway. The village of Saint-Gervais, at 850m, concentrates daily life: the church square, shops, restaurants, and the cable car that ascends to Bettex. Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, around 1150m, is a mountain village positioned facing the massif, gathered around its Baroque church. Le Bettex, at 1400m, is the ski plateau: this is where the domain truly begins. Around it orbit more discreet hamlets, Bionnassay, Les Chattrix, the Plan de la Croix, where one comes seeking silence and old chalets.
The choice is made according to a mode of holiday rather than a map. To ski from your door and spend days on the domain, Le Bettex remains the obvious choice, with views of the massif as a bonus. For a week of walking, dining in town and finishing at the thermal baths, the village of Saint-Gervais offers the best balance, whilst maintaining direct access to the slopes via cable car. Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce is suited to those wanting panoramic views and tranquillity, with its own access to the ski domain. A spa town become base camp for Mont-Blanc
Here, you do not view Mont-Blanc from afar: you live at its foot, in a village that thrives year-round.
The story begins below, in the Bonnant gorges, where a hot spring made the grass green earlier than elsewhere. In 1806, the notary Joseph-Marie Gontard had this water analysed, purchased the land and dug a gallery where he installed four wooden bathtubs. Two centuries of thermal bathing later, the Fayet establishment remains active, and it has given Saint-Gervais its suffix, les Bains, as much as its character: that of a destination, not a station designed solely for skiing.
The other side of this identity is vertical. Saint-Gervais is one of the cradles of mountaineering: the normal route of Mont-Blanc, called here the royal way, departs from its territory, from the Nid d’Aigle towards the Tête Rousse refuge and then the Goûter refuge, at 3835m, France’s highest staffed mountain refuge. The Mont-Blanc Tramway, France’s highest railway, climbs from Le Fayet to the Nid d’Aigle and serves climbing parties and walkers alike. Savoyard Baroque adds the final layer: the church of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, rebuilt between 1726 and 1729 thanks to pedlar-merchants who departed to make their fortune in German-speaking lands, is considered the finest Baroque building in the Mont-Blanc region. A connected winter, a summer that gains altitude
Winter
Saint-Gervais opens onto Évasion Mont-Blanc, a network of approximately 445km of slopes distributed amongst Saint-Gervais, Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, Megève, Combloux, La Giettaz and Les Contamines-Montjoie, between 850m and 2353m. From Le Bettex, you cross onto the Mont d’Arbois and ski to Megève without returning to the car. The terrain is wide, sunny, impeccably groomed: enough to satisfy families and intermediate skiers wanting to cover distance. Those more technically advanced find what they seek on Mont Joly and the slopes of Saint-Nicolas, which are steeper and wilder, whilst the snowpark at Mont-Joux keeps teenagers occupied. Après-ski takes place below, in the village and at the thermal baths rather than in high-altitude bars, with several fine restaurants including La Table d’Armante, which has a Michelin star in the 2026 Guide.
Summer
In summer, everything ascends. The Mont-Blanc Tramway departs at the Nid d’Aigle, at the edge of the Bionnassay glacier, from where the valley’s most spectacular courses and hikes depart. Lower down, the Bionnassay footbridge, the Plan de la Croix plateau and the Vivier lake circuit are walked as a family, and the Tour of Mont-Blanc passes through the Col de Voza, within reach. Cyclists tackle the climb to Bettex, mountain bikers descend via the trails of Mont d’Arbois, and the valley lends itself to paragliding, via ferrata, canyoning and climbing. The day often ends pleasantly in the warm waters of Le Fayet, which is not the least of the singularities of a mountain village.

Yes. The Évasion Mont-Blanc pass connects Saint-Gervais and Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce to Mont d’Arbois and Megève, as well as to Combloux, La Giettaz and Les Contamines-Montjoie, totalling approximately 445km of slopes between 850m and 2353m. From Le Bettex, you can access Megève mid-morning, without shuttle or car.
Is Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc worth visiting in summer?
It is indeed one of the destinations where summer compares most favourably with winter. The Mont-Blanc Tramway opens the high mountains effortlessly to the Nid d’Aigle, the commune concentrates the massif’s great itineraries, from the Bionnassay glacier to the Miage chalets, and the Fayet thermal baths give days a rhythm rare at altitude. Add the Baroque heritage of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, pass cycling and valley activities, and the week fills itself.
