Montgenèvre sits on a pass, at 1860m, and this defines its entire geography: the village stretches along the road heading towards Italy, and the slopes descend on both sides. To the north, the snow-front of the Chalmettes opens onto the sectors of l’Aigle and the Gondrans. To the south, the Chalvet occupies the sunny side, reached by the footbridge spanning the road. Between them, the village itself, its shops and the Obélisque district, named after the monument standing at the edge of the pass road, where some of the chalets are situated.
Choosing your district here amounts to choosing your light and your rhythm. On the Chalmettes side, you ski from your door and return for lunch without effort: it is the base camp for families and groups wanting to do everything on foot. On the Chalvet side, the southern exposure and the distance from the main axis buy you calm and longer afternoons on the terrace. In the village itself, shops, cafés and ski schools are a few minutes away, which matters when you come without a car or with young children. A pass village, a border you cross on skis
Here, the mountains have never been a backdrop: they are a passage, and skiing came only later to take root.
The Montgenèvre pass ranks among the oldest crossings of the Alps between France and Italy, and the village owes its character to this: a main street, tightly built houses, a border close by. Skiing appeared here in 1907, making it one of the very first French resorts. This precedent is still felt today. You are not in a resort sketched in one stroke across virgin plateau, but in a Briançonnais village that grew around its road, with its church, its obelisk and neighbouring hamlets.
The other defining feature is the light. We are in the south of the Alps, on a widely open pass, and many stays organise themselves around a habit that has taken hold: the morning on the French side, lunch on the other side of the border, return via the slopes in late afternoon. Briançon, its old town and its Vauban fortifications inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, are reached in about ten kilometres of descent. Our chalets and apartments are chosen here for location, view and genuine proximity to the lifts, which makes all the difference in a village stretched along a pass.
A pass lived in both seasons
Winter
Montgenèvre combines with Clavière, Cesana, Sansicario, Sauze d’Oulx and Sestrières to form the international Voie Lactée domain, billed at nearly 400km of runs. On site, two moods meet: the Chalvet, on the sunny side, more demanding and wooded, and the Chalmettes and Gondrans side, where families and intermediate skiers find wide, regular slopes. Clavière is reached in around fifteen minutes of skiing, with no shuttle or interruption, and the chain of Italian lifts leads up to the Sestrières plateaux, host to the alpine skiing events of the Turin Games in 2006. Après-ski remains village-like: the cafés on the main street rather than the big nightlife machines.
Summer
The summer season opens a very wide terrain. Altitude golf occupies the pass plateau, mountain biking has downhill and enduro itineraries, and hiking rolls out the classics of the area: Lac des Anges, Plane summit, Fort du Janus, Brousset valley where the Durance has its source. The GR5 passes through the village and descends towards Briançon. On the Italian side, a few minutes’ drive away, you can walk to the gorges and suspended catwalks of San Gervasio or towards Lago Gignoux. Further down, the Durance is one of the great whitewater terrain of the Hautes-Alpes.

Chalmettes or Chalvet: which district to choose?
The Chalmettes, on the north slope, offer the most direct snow-front and immediate access to the l’Aigle and Gondrans sectors: it is the choice of families and groups wanting to ski without transport. The Chalvet, on the sunny side, is more sunny and quieter, slightly set back from the pass road. The heart of the village puts shops, cafés and ski schools a few minutes’ walk away.
Can you really ski into Italy from Montgenèvre?
Yes, it is even one of the resort’s attractions. Clavière, the first Italian village, is reached on skis in about fifteen minutes from the bottom of the domain, then the Italian lifts open onto Cesana and Sestrières. You need an extended pass for the international Voie Lactée domain, and the means to manage the return: it is best to keep an eye on the lift closure times.
Is Montgenèvre worth a summer stay?
The pass makes it a very complete summer base: altitude golf, mountain biking, hikes to Lac des Anges, Plane summit or Fort du Janus, GR5 heading towards Briançon, and easy crossing into Italy for the day. Briançon and its Vauban fortifications listed by UNESCO are ten kilometres away, and the Durance offers its whitewater runs downstream.

Stays are booked by the week, Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday depending on the property. You choose your week on the calendar, send your request, and our team confirms availability. Booking is done online, with secure payment and the option to pay in instalments.
What capacity for a family or group?
