Le Grand-Bornand reads in two tiers. Below, at 1000m, the Bornand village is organised around its bulbous-spired church and the grenette, the former grain hall beneath which the Wednesday morning market is held. The ski domain is reached via the Rosay and Joyère cable cars, and the Pont de Suize, Terret and centre sectors are best positioned for living at the village’s pace, with shops within walking distance. Six kilometres higher, on the road to the Col de la Colombière, Chinaillon sits at the upper tier at 1300m, around its two ski fronts, Charmieux and le Floria.
At Chinaillon, everything depends on a few hundred metres. Les Outalays and l’Envers du Chinaillon are the addresses closest to the pistes, between the hamlet centre and the domain. La Mulaterie and le Venay are set slightly back, within easy reach of the Floria and Châtelet ski lifts, with greater tranquillity in the evening. Below, the Bouchet valley and its hamlets, Nant Robert for example, offer the silence of the alps and direct access to the Nordic ski domain: this is where to look if cross-country skiing and snowshoeing matter more than the energy of the ski front. A village of farms that never stopped being one
Here, the resort has not replaced the village: it has grown up around it, and the cows still come down from the alpine pastures.
Le Grand-Bornand has more than 400 century-old chalets, recognisable by their wooden-shingle roofs and their solaret, a hayloft open beneath the framework found nowhere else in the neighbouring valleys. The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption has stood watch over the square since the 12th century, the Maison du Patrimoine preserves the memory of 19th-century rural architecture, and the Bouchet valley, further upstream, is the birthplace of Reblochon cheese: it unfolds its alpine pastures between Mont Lachat and the Aravis cliffs, with working farms, hamlet chapels and marmots on the rocky slopes.
This village is also a capital of biathlon. The Stade Sylvie-Becaert, situated barely 400m from the square, regularly hosts the IBU World Cup since 2013: the courses cross the snowy meadows and pass in front of barns, making it one of the most singular routes on the international circuit. In summer, at the end of August, the Au Bonheur des Mômes festival, established in 1992, transforms the village and Chinaillon into an open-air stage. The winter domain, the summer alps
Winter
The alpine domain unfolds roughly 90km of pistes spread across four sectors: the Joyère plateau, reassuring for beginners and accessible by cable car from the village, the Rosay plateau and its slopes of all levels, the Chinaillon sector, family-friendly and connected to the chalets, and the Maroly valley which leads to the snowpark. Cross-country skiing is practised in the Bouchet valley, on a domain that extends towards La Clusaz. Après-ski remains true to the place: a few terraces at the ski front, Savoyard tables in the village, and local cheese rather than international brands.
Summer
Two mechanical lifts operate in the summer season and provide access to approximately 160km of marked trails and 178km of mountain-bike routes, from ridge-line routes to electric enduro. The Bouchet valley is the great meeting point for walkers: alpine pastures, alpine chalets, limestone cirques and views of the Pointe Percée, the highest point of the Aravis. Cyclists climb to the Col de la Colombière, a stage on the Route des Grandes Alpes and closed in winter, whilst Lake Annecy can be reached in half an hour’s drive for a day of swimming and sailing.

Village or Chinaillon: where should we stay?
Chinaillon, at 1300m, is the ski-at-your-door option: Les Outalays and l’Envers du Chinaillon are closest to the pistes, La Mulaterie and le Venay a little quieter, near the Floria and Châtelet lifts. The village, at 1000m and 6km below, reaches the domain via the Rosay and Joyère cable cars, with the atmosphere of the Bornand bourg and its market. For silence and alpine pastures, look towards the Bouchet valley.
What does the biathlon World Cup mean for a stay in December?
The Stade Sylvie-Becaert is located 400m from the village square, which is unique on the international circuit. During race week in December, the village lives to the rhythm of the event: regulated access, enhanced shuttles and considerable atmosphere. Properties in the village are highly sought after at this time; those in Chinaillon allow you to ski peacefully and come down to watch the races.
Is Le Grand-Bornand worth visiting in summer?
Yes, and it is even one of the most pleasant valleys in the Aravis in fine weather: roughly 160km of trails, 178km of mountain-bike routes, two lifts operating, the Bouchet valley and its Reblochon farms, mountain passes for cyclists and Lake Annecy half an hour away. At the end of August, the Au Bonheur des Mômes festival sets up performances throughout the village, a moment very much enjoyed by families.
