Art Vache at Grand-Bornand: open-air summer trail with painted sculptures

By the AEC Collection team Updated on 28 May 2026 2 min read

Art Vache is an open-air artistic trail organised each summer in Grand-Bornand. Several life-size cows, sculpted in resin and painted by contemporary artists, are positioned throughout the village and neighbouring alpine pastures, forming a self-guided route that visitors discover on foot.

01

A summer open-air exhibition

The Art Vache event takes place each summer (June to September) in Grand-Bornand. The concept: to exhibit animal sculptures (life-size resin cows) painted by contemporary French artists across several locations in the village and valley.

Each sculpture is unique and represents the work of a different artist. Themes vary: abstraction, figuration, traditional Savoyard patterns, international cultural references.

02

The trail

The route is undertaken on foot, following a map available from the tourist office. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the complete version, or one hour for a shorter route centred on the village.

The sculptures are positioned:

On the village square and main street.

Along the Bouchet river.

Within the summer alpine pastures surrounding the area, sometimes 1-2km from the centre.

On certain restaurant and shop terraces.

03

The educational purpose

Art Vache plays upon the contrast between Grand-Bornand’s agropastoral identity (a region producing Reblochon, working farms, Abondance cattle in neighbouring pastures) and contemporary art. It is a way of making contemporary art accessible within a popular setting.

The event is entirely free, part of the commune’s summer cultural programme.

When to visit

The trail is in place from late June to late September. The best times:

Early morning, to combine a walk with photography in soft light.

Late afternoon, when golden light enhances the paintings.
