Le Praz is the lowest of the Courchevel villages, situated at 1300m at the foot of the valley, and also the oldest. You reach it by a road that skirts the forest, and you discover a genuine Savoyard village: narrow streets, chalets of stone and wood that have seen alpine pastures before ski lifts, the chapel of Sainte-Madeleine, a cheese dairy and its ageing caves that recall that the Tarentaise remains first and foremost a land of livestock farmers. Nothing of a resort built on snow: here, the shutters open all year round.
The village reads in three parts. The old heart, around the square and shops, for those who want to dine out on foot and hear the village come alive in the evening. The lake and Olympic jump areas, more open, with the forest as backdrop and the water at hand. Finally the edge, on the heights near the cable car departure, for skiers who want to be on the slopes quickly in the morning and return on skis at day’s end. Courchevel 1850 remains close by, by road or by the lifts, when you feel like dining there or strolling one evening. Courchevel before Courchevel
A valley floor, a forest, a lake and two Olympic jump areas: Le Praz comprises few elements, and that is precisely what gives it its value.
The village existed long before the resort. It was a hamlet of livestock farmers in the commune of Saint-Bon, today Courchevel, when everything was being created higher up, after the war. Le Praz was not redrawn for the occasion: it was simply joined to what was above. The barns became chalets, the attics became bedrooms, but the volumes, the stone and weathered wood remained, and the fir trees of the forest still stand above the roofs.
Its main feature is its two ski jump ramps, built for the Albertville Olympics in 1992 and still in use for training and competition. They stand above the village, a short walk from the lake, and give Le Praz a silhouette that no other level of Courchevel possesses. Since the 2023 World Championships, the Éclipse run also descends here. A village that lives all four seasons
Winter
Le Praz is connected to the ski area by the Le Praz cable car and the Forêt chairlift, which open in a few minutes to the Courchevel, La Tania sector, then to all three valleys and its 600km of advertised runs. It is a discreet starting point on a very large area, with a return to the village via forest runs, often the most pleasant when the light fades. Après-ski here revolves around a few tables and a drink, in a village where you meet year-round residents, with the animation of 1850 within shuttle reach for those seeking it.
Summer
As fine weather arrives, Le Praz lake becomes the centre of gravity: a walk around the water, pontoons, benches in the shade and the jump areas in the background, where jumpers continue to train off-snow. Paths leave directly from the village towards the forest and alpine pastures, and Courchevel’s mountain bike routes pass through the area. The Tarentaise mountain passes are within driving distance for cyclists, summer lifts open the heights, and Le Praz returns to its village rhythm, with its cheese dairy, ageing caves and terraces.

For its character and quiet. Le Praz is a Savoyard village inhabited year-round, with its old chalets, streets, forest and lake, where the higher levels are primarily resorts. You reach the ski area effortlessly via the cable car, you sleep in peace, and you keep 1850 at a few minutes’ distance when you want to go out. It is the right choice if you are looking for village atmosphere rather than a resort showcase.
Can you ski easily from Le Praz despite its altitude?
Yes. The Le Praz cable car and Forêt chairlift depart from the village and give access to the ski area in a few minutes, with possible return via forest runs at day’s end. Some properties are a walk from the departure point, others are served by free shuttles that connect the different levels of Courchevel. Tell us your priority, ski-in or village heart, and we advise accordingly.
Is Courchevel Le Praz worth visiting in summer?
It is one of its finest seasons. The lake and its developed surroundings, the nearby forest, paths that leave the village, the Olympic jump areas still in use and preserved local life make for a mountain stay in the true sense, without the density of altitude resorts. Hiking, mountain biking, road cycling over the Tarentaise passes and long clear evenings make up the bulk of the programme.

What capacity for a family or group?

How does arrival on site work?
You are welcomed by a local partner agency present on site, which completes the property condition report and provides you with practical information. For certain properties, independent arrival can be arranged on request.
