Les Houches reads not as a resort but as a village, a settlement in the Chamonix valley built in hamlets rather than along a snow-covered front. The lower part of the village, around Saint-Antoine and La Griaz, brings together shops and ski schools: the obvious choice for those who want to do everything on foot. Higher up the slope, Le Coupeau opens onto space and light, with the Mont-Blanc massif directly opposite. Les Chavants, clustered around their small lake and old farms, retain a forested and very quiet atmosphere. Vaudagne, poised on the Servoz side, remains the most rural of the hamlets, with its chapel and wooden barns.
The choice comes down to three preferences: staying within reach of the Bellevue and Prarion departures, enjoying the quiet of a higher hamlet, or taking in real village life just 6km from Chamonix. Mont-Blanc opposite, forest all around
Here, you do not view Mont-Blanc from a distance: you have it directly opposite, from a village that has kept its farms, its chapels and its firs.
Before becoming a ski area, Les Houches was a land of alpine pastures and cultivation, and this is still evident. The hamlets have preserved their basins, their bread ovens, their wooden barns and a series of chapels and oratories that you encounter whilst walking, in Vaudagne as in Bourgeat. Above the village stands the statue of Christ the King, erected in 1933 and protected as a historic monument, one of the most recognisable landmarks at the entrance to the valley.
The contrast with central Chamonix is distinct, and that is precisely what many come seeking: a living village year-round, quieter, more accessible, a few minutes from the bustle when you want it. This does not prevent Les Houches from being a high-level address, as the Verte des Houches, the Kandahar piste, regularly hosts the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Our chalets and apartments are chosen for their location, views and the quiet of a still-forested slope.
A slope that is skied in winter and walked in summer
Winter
The Les Houches and Saint-Gervais domain extends from 1000m to 1900m and covers approximately 55km of pistes, served by two cable cars, Bellevue and Prarion, and extended on the Saint-Gervais side by the Col de Voza. Its particular feature is that it is largely threaded through forest: when the upper valley is windy or misty, you ski here sheltered, with good visibility. The majority of pistes are blue and red, comfortable terrain for families to progress together, whilst the Verte des Houches, the famous black Kandahar piste, is for the most skilled skiers. Around them, the Bellevue and Prarion plateaux can be explored on snowshoes or with skins. Après-ski remains that of a village: the tables in town, and the Prarion, perched on its plateau.
Summer
Les Houches is the official starting point of the Tour du Mont-Blanc, whose first stage crosses the Col de Voza towards Contamines-Montjoie. You may do just the beginning, or aim higher with the ascent to the Aiguillette des Houches and its panorama over the Aiguilles de Chamonix. The Merlet animal park, a former alpage at 1500m directly facing Mont-Blanc, remains a must for families, with its ibex, chamois, mouflon and marmots in semi-liberty, and a short detour via Christ the King on the return. The Bellevue cable car gives access to the plateau at 1800m and to the Mont-Blanc Tramway line, which climbs to the Nid d’Aigle at 2372m. For the end of day, the Lac des Chavants is more than sufficient.

Which hamlet to choose in Les Houches?
To do everything on foot and stay close to shops and ski schools, head to the lower village, around Saint-Antoine and La Griaz. For views and quiet, head up the slope, to Le Coupeau or towards Les Chavants and its lake. Vaudagne, more rural, suits those truly seeking quiet and who are happy with a few minutes’ drive.
Is the Verte des Houches, the Kandahar piste, skiable by everyone?
It is a black descent piste, threaded through forest and designed for competition: it is for very strong skiers, and it can be closed during race and training periods. The rest of the domain is considerably more accessible, with a large majority of well-sheltered blue and red pistes, which means a whole family can ski together without separating.
Is Les Houches worth a summer stay?
Yes, and it is even one of the most convenient bases in the valley: the Tour du Mont-Blanc starts here, the Aiguillette des Houches offers one of the finest views of the massif, the Merlet animal park takes up a family day, and the Bellevue cable car opens onto the plateau and the Mont-Blanc Tramway up to the Nid d’Aigle. Chamonix is a few minutes away for anything else.
