Pietracorbara Beach: 450m of fine sand on Cap Corse's eastern coast

By the AEC Collection team Updated on 28 May 2026 4 min read

Pietracorbara Beach, some ten kilometres north of Erbalunga on Cap Corse’s eastern coast, is one of the very few beaches of fine sand on the Cap. A stretch of 450 metres facing turquoise water, with a more authentic family atmosphere than the large beaches of southern Corsica. A discreet alternative to Saleccia for those wishing to avoid the crowds.

01

A geological rarity: sand on Cap Corse

Cap Corse, a granite peninsula north of Bastia, is essentially composed of rocky coastline and pebble coves. Pietracorbara Beach is one of the very few fine sand beaches on the eastern coast, formed by an alluvial valley that has carried sediments and fine sands from the interior massif (Monte Alticcione, 1139m) down to the sea.

The visual effect is striking: translucent turquoise water, white sand, very gentle slope descending progressively. The beach is compared by some visitors to Caribbean lagoons, a comparison that becomes somewhat excessive in high summer when the beach’s hinterland returns to its standard Mediterranean vegetation.

02

450m, busier but not overcrowded

The beach stretches for approximately 450 metres, which allows it to absorb summer visitor numbers without saturation. Even at peak season on 15 August, one can easily find space for a towel, provided you arrive before 11am.

The atmosphere is distinctly family-oriented: families from Bastia and the mainland, few party-goers or noise. The beach is closer in spirit to “traditional Corsican maritime villages” than to the fashionable beaches of Porto-Vecchio.

03

Access and facilities

Direct access by car:

From Erbalunga, 15 minutes via the D80, the coastal road that runs along Cap Corse’s eastern shore.

From Bastia, 30 minutes total.

Several free car parks at the beach’s edge, which is rare on Cap beaches (most require remote parking with a walk). In high season, car parks fill up around 11am; it is advisable to arrive early.

On site:

Several beach huts offering light refreshment and sunbed and parasol rental.

Public facilities.

Bars and restaurants for lunch.

The facilities are standard for a beach cove, without the luxury standard of private beaches on the Côte d’Azur, which contributes to the relaxed atmosphere of the place.

04

The hinterland: a still-preserved cape

Pietracorbara is not merely a beach: it is also a valley that stretches 8km inland, with several historic hamlets (Castello, Suare, Oreta) and hiking trails that lead up towards Monte Alticcione.

A combination of beach in the morning and hiking in the afternoon is easily arranged from the beach car park. The hamlets loop trail takes approximately 3 hours for 8km, with moderate elevation gain.

05

When to visit

June and September: ideal conditions (water at 22-24°C, moderate visitor numbers).

July-August: high season, requiring planning for car parking and lunch arrangements.

May and October: beach nearly empty, cooler water, soft light for photography.

Off-season: the beach remains accessible year-round for walks, particularly appreciated in autumn for its golden light.

06

Nearby: Erbalunga cove, Macinaggio

The typical itinerary combines Pietracorbara with:

Erbalunga cove, 15 minutes to the south: fishing village, gastronomic restaurants, authentic Cap Corse atmosphere.

Macinaggio, 30 minutes to the north: significant marina, starting point for the Customs Officers’ Trail which reaches Centuri via the coastal path.

Saint-Florent, further west on the opposite coast, to experience both sides of the Cap in a single day.
