Chevanu Beach in Pianottoli-Caldarello: the discreet bay of far southern Corsica
Chevanu beach (sometimes spelled Kévano) is one of the finest beaches in far southern Corsica, and among the most discreet. Located in the commune of Pianottoli-Caldarello, near the Golfe de Figari, it has the rare distinction, for a beach of this calibre, of remaining undeveloped and seldom crowded, even at peak season.
The layout of the place partly explains this character: it is not a single continuous beach, but a bay composed of a principal beach at its head, flanked by several small lateral coves. This geography multiplies quiet spots, allowing each visitor to find their own secluded area, even when the car park is full.
The setting: luminous sand, maquis, rocks
The sand at Chevanu is fine, golden and luminous. The water, as throughout far southern Corsica, is crystalline with remarkable clarity, the seabed visible several metres down. The gradient is gentle, making the beach an excellent choice for families with children.
The immediate setting is composed of dense maquis behind the beach and rocks that frame the points of the lateral coves. It is this combination that lends the place its wild character, with no ubiquitous beach bars, no heavy development, the maquis touching the sand in places.
Access from Pianottoli
From Figari, take the N196 towards Ajaccio. In the village of Pianottoli-Caldarello, turn left at the junction (sign for “camping”) onto the D122, then turn right towards Kevano. After the campsite, turn right again to access the car park (sign for Chevanu).
The final approach is short: the car park lies less than 300 metres from the beach. This is an advantage for families with children or on hot days, with no tiring walk.
Snorkelling and marine life
The waters at Chevanu, its posidonia seagrass and lateral rocky zones make it a particularly rewarding beach for snorkelling. Several schools of small fish, starfish, and occasionally grouper sheltering beneath the rocks. Bring your own equipment, as rental is generally not available on site.
The lateral rocky zones, more so than the central beach, offer the best observations. Move slowly, do not disturb the fish schools, and remove nothing.
The setting: far south, Bonifacio twenty minutes away
Pianottoli-Caldarello lies less than 20 minutes’ drive from Bonifacio, at the far south of Corsica. The village remains authentic and quiet, with no large resort, no developed promenade, few hotels. For those seeking to avoid the bustle of Porto-Vecchio and wanting a calm base whilst having easy access to Bonifacio, it is a logical choice.
Proximity to the Domaine de Murtoli, the Bouches de Bonifacio and, by boat, the Lavezzi islands rounds out an exceptional range of activities for those with a vehicle.
When to visit
Like most Corsican beaches, Chevanu fills gradually in July and August, but without reaching the saturation of celebrated beaches. Mornings and late afternoons are the quietest periods. May-June and September remain the best windows, with water still (or already) at 22°C, perfect light, and very manageable numbers.
