Scandola from Calvi: the cruise to the UNESCO Reserve and Girolata
The Scandola Nature Reserve is one of two French sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1983 in the “nature + landscape” category (alongside the Gulf of Porto and the Calanques de Piana). From Calvi, it is the most sought-after sea excursion in Balagne. There are three main formats, from the short tour of 4 hours to the full tour of 7 hours including the Calanques de Piana.
UNESCO since 1983: what this protects
The Scandola Nature Reserve was created in 1975 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. The designation covers:
The Scandola peninsula, a series of spectacular red volcanic cliffs descending into the sea.
The village of Girolata, a fishing hamlet accessible only by boat or on foot via a hiking trail (no road access).
The Calanques de Piana, further south, renowned for their eroded rocks sculpted into tortuous forms.
Together they form a protected area of more than 1,900 hectares of marine and terrestrial landscape, managed by the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse. It is one of the Mediterranean’s earliest protected marine reserves.
Three cruise formats departing from Calvi
Several operators (Giru Mare, Calvi Aventure, Calvi Évasion) offer excursions departing from Calvi harbour:
4-hour format (departure 14:30): visit to Scandola only, following the red cliffs, marine caves, without landing. Price approximately €90 per adult.
6-hour format (departure 08:30 or 14:30): Scandola + stop at Girolata with lunch on your own in the village (approximately 1.5 hours). Price approximately €115 per adult.
Full-day format 7-7.5 hours: Scandola + Girolata + Calanques de Piana, covering the entire UNESCO site in one day. Price approximately €140-150 per adult.
Vessels and passenger numbers
An important detail: the reserve enforces visitor quotas. To preserve the site, operators use 12-seater boats (semi-rigid or small motor vessels), with each operator typically running only one departure per day.
Practical consequence: booking is mandatory and should be made several days in advance during peak season (July, August), often a week beforehand. Outside peak season (May, June, September), booking the day before is usually sufficient.
What to see at sea
The red cliffs of Scandola are of volcanic origin (rhyolite), dating from 250 million years ago, and have been sculpted by marine erosion into tafoni (characteristic cavities of Corsica’s west coast) and marine caves.
Marine biodiversity is exceptional:
The osprey (Pandion haliaetus), the reserve’s symbolic raptor, nests in the cliffs and hunts at the water’s surface. Sighting probability is high during the season.
Shags, Yelkouan shearwaters, and other seabirds.
Underwater, seagrass meadows (posidonia) in excellent condition, grouper in rocky seabeds, and occasionally dolphins or loggerhead turtles.

Travel Book AEC CollectionGirolata: a world apart
The village of Girolata is one of the very few hamlets in mainland France with no road access. You can reach it only via:
Boat from Calvi, Porto or Cargèse.
On foot, by the postman’s trail from the Croix pass (1.5 hours downhill, 2 hours uphill).
Home to a few dozen residents year-round, with several restaurants and visitor accommodation in season. The hamlet retains its authenticity, the absence of road access prevents any motorised development.
When to visit
June and September offer the best conditions: calm seas, clear skies, modest visitor numbers, and the opportunity to observe ospreys brooding or with chicks.
July, August: peak season, advance booking essential, seas sometimes rough due to the libeccio in mid-afternoon.
May and October: trips possible according to weather, cooler water, far fewer visitors.
Cancellations are possible in rough seas; check with the operator the day before.
