Bavella Needles from Porto-Vecchio: Pass, Trou de la Bombe, Canyoning

From Porto-Vecchio, the Bavella Needles represent the principal mountain escape, a 45-minute drive via the D368 through Zonza, departing the coastal beaches for a mineral world of reddish granite peaks, perched above 1600 metres. The Bavella Pass (1218m) is the natural terminus and the starting point for the majority of routes.

The seven needles that give the site its name form a jagged crest, rising above the Corsican black pine forest. The principal summit, Punta di l’Acellu (Punta Velaco) at 1855m, closes the view to the west. It is one of the island’s most spectacular landscapes, compared often to the Dolomites or the mountains of Sardinia.

The approach via Zonza: the panoramic road

From Porto-Vecchio, the D368 ascends through l’Ospedale (forest and artificial lake at 1000m altitude), crosses Zonza, a historic way-station between coast and mountain, then climbs through hairpins to the Bavella Pass. The statue of Our Lady of the Snows, erected in 1953 facing the Needles, marks the arrival. Panoramic 360° views, car parks, restaurants open in season.

Arrival by this route is one of the highlights of a stay, the final hairpin reveals the Needles all at once, like a wall of granite rising against the sky. For the best light, aim for late morning or late afternoon; in the full heat of midday, the contrast flattens.

Major hikes departing from the pass

Several celebrated routes depart from Bavella Pass.

The « Trou de la Bombe » (U Compuleddu), the most accessible and most emblematic hike: 2 hours return via a marked trail leading to a natural arch pierced through the rock, opening a window over the valley. Modest elevation gain, stony terrain. Practicable for families.

The Needles Traverse (alpine variant of the GR 20), an engaging route passing through fixed cables and requiring experience and equipment (harness, helmet). Duration 5 to 7 hours. Not to be attempted without a guide.

The ascent of Punta di l’Acellu, the principal summit, accessible via an unequipped climbing route. Exceptional setting but reserved for climbers.

Canyoning and climbing: the vertical dimension

Bavella is one of Corsica’s premier canyoning sites, particularly accessible from Porto-Vecchio. The canyons of the Purcaraccia (the best-known, natural slides and jumps into clear water pools) and the Vacca are the summer classics. The season runs from May to September; guidance by a qualified instructor is mandatory and strongly recommended even for experienced practitioners (technical terrain, unpredictable water flow).

On the climbing side, Bavella offers hundreds of equipped routes in all grades, on granite of exceptional quality. Several local guides operate from Porto-Vecchio, Zonza and Solenzara.

Practical information and safety

The altitude (1218m at the pass) brings cooler temperatures than on the coast; bring a fleece and windbreaker even at the height of summer, particularly for early morning hikes. Summer storms are frequent at the end of the day; finish high-altitude routes before 3pm in July and August.

Access to the Corsican mountains is regulated in case of fire risk; consult the alert map before setting out, particularly between 1st July and 30th September.
