Canella Beach: 400m of fine sand south of Solenzara
The coastal road descending from Solenzara to the south winds between maquis and granite rocks. Approximately 3.5 kilometres after Favone beach, a discreet sign indicates “Canella”. The road drops towards the sea; a limited car park appears on the right, generally full by mid-morning in summer. This is where Canella beach begins, Piaghja di Canedda in Corsican, one of the finest coves on the eastern coast of South Corsica.
400 metres of fine sand in a sheltered cove
The beach stretches for approximately 400 metres, framed by two rocky promontories covered in maquis. It is the only fine-sand beach in Solenzara outside the port’s perimeter, with most other nearby shores composed of pebbles or small coves. The sand is white-golden, fine, and descends in a very gentle slope towards the sea.
The turquoise waters possess the characteristic transparency of sheltered bays: little current, seabed visible for several metres, minimal swell. This makes Canella particularly suited to families with children and novice swimmers, with shallow water extending widely before the seabed drops away.
Getting there: the car park question
Access to the beach is via the coastal road from Solenzara, or by boat from the port. The car park at the foot of the beach is limited; it fills by late morning in July, August. For a peaceful day, aim to arrive before 10 o’clock. Parking along the road above is prohibited and subject to fines.
The beach is not patrolled by lifeguards as some busier beaches are. A few beachfront restaurants operate in season, including a thatched beach restaurant serving grilled fish and simple dishes; however, many visitors prefer to picnic to fully enjoy the cove.
The surrounding environment
The promontories framing the cove lend themselves to snorkelling. The rocky seabed shelters small Mediterranean marine fauna, bream, wrasse, occasional grouper, and Posidonia meadows classified as natural heritage. Those inclined to walk can follow the rocks southwards to reach other small coves that are less accessible.
The beach interior remains unspoilt. No rows of beach umbrellas, no loungers lining the entire length. It is this relative tranquillity that accounts for Canella’s reputation among those familiar with the southern coast, though this tranquillity diminishes in July, August, when the beach naturally fills.
When to visit
The best period is mid-May to mid-June or early September to mid-October. The sea remains warm (around 20-22°C depending on the year) and the beach regains its calm. July and August remain the busiest months, with heavy numbers between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.; during this period, aim for early morning or late afternoon.
