Ghjunchitu: the Balagne beach reached on foot from Bodri

A beach of 500 metres of pale sand

Ghjunchitu extends for approximately 500 metres of pale sand, framed by maquis scrubland and rock formations. The gradient is gentle, the water deepening gradually, which makes the beach particularly well-suited to families with children and swimmers who value a welcoming entry without abrupt transition.

The seabed is conducive to snorkelling, with clear visibility and varied marine life near the rocky outcrops, though not reaching the richness of marine reserves such as Scandola.

Access: why you must walk

Road access is from L’Île-Rousse via the D513, then the D197 in the direction of Lumio. There are two car parks with seasonal charges: one on the Bodri side, the other at the southern point of Ghjunchitu.

Depending on which car park you choose, walking time varies. From the Bodri car park, allow 5 minutes on foot to reach Bodri beach, then a further 5 to 10 minutes along the coastal path to reach Ghjunchitu. From the second car park, access is direct.

The alternative, and more typical option, is the Trinichellu, the little Corsican train, which serves the Balagne beaches from L’Île-Rousse. This is the simplest access for those wishing to avoid parking constraints in July and August.

Use: more than a beach

Beyond swimming, Ghjunchitu accommodates several gentle water activities: kayaking, paddleboarding, beach tennis. Several beach establishments operate in season, with lounger hire and dining facilities on site; the offering is more structured than at some less-equipped Balagne beaches.

The wider context: the beaches of Balagne

Ghjunchitu is part of a bathing area that extends beyond itself. On foot via the coastal path, one easily reaches Bodri to the north (more discreet, yet equally frequented by regulars) and the Davia waterfront. Further afield by road, Lozari beach offers a different setting, longer and more exposed to the wind.

For a stay in L’Île-Rousse, it is preferable to consider these beaches as a circuit, varying your choice according to wind, crowds and inclination.

When to visit

High season concentrates visitor numbers, particularly between mid-July and mid-August. On days of strong westerly winds (libeccio), Ghjunchitu can be uncomfortable; the beach is more exposed than other sheltered spots in Balagne. The shoulder seasons, June and September, offer pleasantly warm water and considerably fewer visitors.
