Saleccia Beach: 1km of white sand in the Désert des Agriates
The Saleccia beach is one of Corsica’s most widely circulated images, yet also one of its most difficult to access. Situated within the Désert des Agriates, on the north-west coast between Bastia and Saint-Florent, it stretches for over one kilometre of white sand bordered by turquoise waters. To reach it: no surfaced road, no public transport, only a 4×4 track or boat.
A cinematic beach: “The Longest Day” in 1962
Saleccia’s fame stems from the American film “The Longest Day” (1962), which recounts the Normandy landings. As the Normandy beaches were already significantly scarred by post-war reconstruction, the production team chose Saleccia for several landing scenes. The similarity of the sand and the scarcity of visible buildings in the background made it a natural perfect backdrop.
The episode brought the beach international recognition before the waves of mass beach tourism, and established it in collective memory well before Saint-Florent became a sought-after destination.
The Désert des Agriates: why it has remained unspoiled
The Désert des Agriates is a vast expanse of 15,000 hectares of maquis, garrigue and coastline, designated littoral conservatoire since the 1980s. The region owes its name (from the Latin “ager”, cultivated lands) to an agricultural past abandoned in the 19th century, when peasants migrated towards coastal towns.
Today, it is one of the last wild coastal zones of the western Mediterranean. No villages, few facilities, and a protected status that forbids any major construction or development. The only accesses are ancient and remain deliberately rudimentary.
Reaching Saleccia: three options, three rhythms
Three possible routes, each with its constraints:
1. The 4×4 track from Casta (D81): 12km of stony path through the Agriates. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours of journey time, taken carefully. Since 2023, an access fee of €10 is charged at the Saleccia car park. All vehicles are theoretically permitted following recent improvements, though a vehicle with raised ground clearance remains highly advisable.
2. The shuttle boat from Saint-Florent port: daily during the season (July-August), departures hourly from 9am. Two historic companies: Le Popeye (red hull) and U Saleccia (blue hull). The crossing takes 20 minutes to Le Lotu, then 5 minutes to Saleccia. Return fare around €25 per adult.
3. On foot from Le Lotu: for those landing at Le Lotu, a coastal path connects the two beaches in 40 minutes to 1 hour of walking. This suits hikers wishing to visit both beaches.
Comfort and facilities on site
Saleccia remains a natural beach: no beach facilities, no sunbeds, no beachfront restaurant. You come with your picnic, parasol, and water.
U Paradisu, a hotel-campsite set back from the beach at Saleccia, offers light refreshments and paid showers for visitors. It is the only structure in immediate proximity.
No mobile network on the beach; plan to inform contacts in advance.
When to visit
High season (July-August) crowds the beach during midday, with full shuttles and car park at capacity by 11am. To avoid the peak:
Before 9am or after 5pm in high summer, you will find genuine comfort, and the late afternoon light on the turquoise waters is memorable.
June and September remain the best windows: water still warm (22-24°C), moderate crowds, less saturated shuttles.
May and October offer a near-empty beach, cooler water but soft light and buzzing marshland surroundings.
