Palombaggia from Figari: 2km of white sand, pink granite and umbrella pines
Palombaggia beach is the iconic image of south Corsica: 2 kilometres of white sand bordered by pink granite rocks and umbrella pines. Twenty-five minutes from Figari airport, it marks the most direct access to the south from international arrivals. The beach is closer to the airport than to Porto-Vecchio, with which it is traditionally associated.
The image that went round the world
Palombaggia is one of the most photographed and published French beaches in the world, regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in France and Europe. The visual combination is unique:
Very white and fine sand, which gives the shallow waters a translucent turquoise colour.
Blocks of pink granite that emerge from the sand and sea, particularly to the north-east near the main car park. Local granite takes on this pinkish tint due to the presence of feldspar, a geological peculiarity of south Corsica.
A forest of umbrella pines behind the beach, protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, which borders the entire beach and provides rare shade during the season.
A very gentle slope to the seabed, ideal for children and occasional swimmers.
2km of sand, two ends
The beach forms with its neighbour Tamaricciu an arc of 2 kilometres between:
Punta Cerbicale to the north, which marks the end towards Porto-Vecchio.
Punta di Colombara to the south, more discreet, which opens towards the coves of Tamaricciu and beyond.
The arc is divided into several sections, some very busy (centre), others quieter (southern ends). For those wishing to avoid crowds, a short walk south of the main car park makes a dramatic difference to footfall.
Access: from Figari, from Porto-Vecchio
Two main routes:
From Figari airport (FSC), 25 minutes’ drive via the T10 then D859, direct access to the main car park. This is the quickest access on international arrival.
From Porto-Vecchio, 15 minutes’ drive via the D368.
Several paid car parks closest to the beach (approximately €5 for half a day in high season), free outside season.

Palombaggia has a full range of beach bars, unlike wilder beaches such as Saleccia:
Several private beaches with loungers, parasols and restaurants: Tahiti Plage, U Cabanu, and other established venues.
Restaurants with feet in the sand, generally with fish dishes, Mediterranean salads, and lunch menus.
Water sports equipment hire (paddle, kayak) on certain sections.
Booking recommended at midday in July-August for private beaches.
When to visit
High season (July-August) is at capacity at midday. For comfort:
Before 11am: car park accessible, ideal light, calm water.
After 5pm: crowds thin out, golden light on the pines and rocks.
In June and September: optimal conditions, moderate footfall, water still warm enough to swim in.
Autumn and spring offer an almost deserted beach, magnificent light, ideal for photography and walking.
Combining with Bonifacio or Tamaricciu
From Palombaggia, two options to extend your visit:
To the south, follow the coast via Tamaricciu and continue to Bonifacio (45 minutes), to combine beach in the morning and a citadel visit in the afternoon.
To the north, head back to Porto-Vecchio (15 minutes), for lunch in the old town or a visit to the port.
