Palombaggia: 2km of white sand, stone pines and red porphyry near Porto-Vecchio

Palombaggia beach, 10km south of Porto-Vecchio, is the most celebrated of Corsican beaches, and among the most photographed in the Mediterranean. Over nearly 2 kilometres, white sand stretches in several coves separated by red porphyry outcrops, beneath a pinewood of stone pines that descend to the sand, offering rare shade along this coastline.

The combination of white sand, stone pines, turquoise water and red porphyry is, indeed, almost unique in mainland France. This justifies the beach’s near-mythical status, despite footfall that can become substantial in July and August.

Several beaches, one bay

What is known as “Palombaggia” is in fact a series of small beaches in succession, separated by rocky outcrops descending into the sea. From north to south:

Plage di Pini, the most celebrated and most photographed, is the one featured on postcards, with its stone pines reaching almost to the sand. Further south, more secluded coves, some accessible only by the coastal path, which remain quieter even in high season.

The water is shallow for the first few dozen metres, depth increases gradually, which reassures families. Beyond the swimming zone, seagrass beds take over.

Access and parking

Access is via the Palombaggia road from Porto-Vecchio. Two main car parks:

The north car park, free, beneath the pines, fills quickly in season, sometimes by 9.30am in July and August. The south car park, charged (approximately €10 per day), which includes a voucher redeemable at one of the restaurants overlooking the beach. This pricing measure, introduced to manage visitor numbers, is less off-putting than it appears; a day at Palombaggia often involves lunch.

On site, free toilets and showers are available at several points. A few beach bars and restaurants punctuate the coastline, though amenities remain more understated than at other celebrated beaches (Pampelonne, for example).

Context: Corsica’s wild south

Palombaggia sits within a peninsula that continues south through Tamaricciu beach, Cala Rossa cape and Santa Giulia beach, the other great emblematic beach of the area, quieter and more family-oriented. Together they form one of the most unspoilt coastlines in southern Corsica, despite tourism pressures.

The hinterland opens quickly onto the Ospedale forests, the artificial lake and, higher up, the Bavella Needles. This combination of beach and mountains within a single day is among the principal assets of a stay in Porto-Vecchio.

When to visit

Late May, June and September are the best windows: water still (or already) at 22-24°C, end-of-season light on the pines and rocks, manageable visitor numbers. July and August remain busy during the day; aim for arrival at 8am or after 5pm to enjoy the beach in reasonable conditions. Out of season, October and April can still offer very fine days with the water warm and few others present.
