Renting a chalet or apartment in La Tania with AEC Collection
La Tania fits within a handkerchief of forest, and yet the village reveals itself in three distinct parts. At the bottom, the snow front at the foot of the cable car: this is where the original residences designed by Jacques Labro, the architect of Avoriaz, stand facing the mountains, with shops, a ski school and piste access just metres away. Here you rent for skiing quite literally at your doorstep. Just above, the Quartier des Chalets lines more recent wooden buildings along roads climbing between spruce trees: quieter, more intimate, a few minutes’ walk further, and in exchange offering clear views over the valley.
On the edge, the hamlets reveal another face of the place: Villaflou, La Nouvaz with its chapel, and Le Praz 2km below, an old Courchevel village that remains inhabited year-round, with its lake and Olympic ski jumps. A free shuttle connects the Courchevel villages, Saint-Bon to Courchevel 1850 via Le Praz and Moriond, making a car unnecessary once you’ve unpacked. Tell us how you live your holidays, and we’ll guide you towards the right neighbourhood. Stays are booked by the week, the calendar and availability shown are accurate, and booking is done online.

The bear’s den, become village
A resort born from an Olympic moment, set at 1400m in a forest of spruce trees, and which had the good sense to remain small.
Before the resort, there was La Tagna, a hamlet halfway between Courchevel and Méribel whose name designated, it is said in Savoyard dialect, the bear’s den. In the late 1980s, the municipality of La Perrière decided to build a resort there, inaugurated as the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics approached, where it housed athletes and journalists. The commission went to Jacques Labro: rather than clearing a space, he nestled wooden buildings among the trees, with the idea that the forest would remain the principal subject. And it still does.
What strikes you on arrival is the silence. La Tania is pedestrianised, around 4000 beds, without the usual procession of cars: a few shops, two or three terraces, children heading down the piste to the foot of the buildings. The village has retained its clientele of families and regulars, while occupying one of the finest locations in the Trois Vallées, equidistant from both major slopes. You will also find a gastronomic restaurant, Le Farçon, where Julien Machet cooks Savoyard cuisine with Mediterranean accents and has held a Michelin star since 2006. Our chalets and apartments are chosen for their location, views and the quiet of the forest, with direct piste access as the primary requirement.
The forest in winter, the alpine pastures in summer
Winter
From the snow front, the cable car rises above the forest, where two chairlifts, the Bouc Blanc and the Dou des Lanches, open the gateway to the Trois Vallées: Courchevel on one side, Méribel on the other, and 600km of linked pistes on the edge of the Vanoise National Park. La Tania’s sector is the most forested part of the domain, which makes all the difference on poor visibility days: when fog hides the heights, you ski here with full sight. The return to the village is down pistes that plunge through the trees, the Folyères, Plan Fontaine and the Moretta Blanche. Après-ski is in keeping with the place: a few bars at the foot of the pistes, and the buzz of Courchevel 1850 a shuttle away.
Summer
In summer, La Tania becomes a forest village again. Trails start from the village itself: the Moulin path, roughly 4km, heads towards the hamlets and their chapel, others lead to Le Praz and its lake, Le Freney or Villaflou. Higher up, the Bouc Blanc plateau offers one of the valley’s finest picnic spots, and the high-altitude lakes of the massif, Merlet, du Rateau, du Pêtre, are accessible as day trips towards the Vanoise. Mountain biking features prominently, downhill as well as enduro or electric, on the signposted routes of the Trois Vallées, and the same slopes delight trail runners.
Renting in La Tania: what we’re asked
Snow front or Quartier des Chalets: what to choose?
The snow front for skiing literally at your doorstep and proximity to shops, ski school and the cable car: this is the choice for families with young children. The Quartier des Chalets, above, for quiet, wood and views over the valley, with a few extra minutes’ walk or shuttle in the morning. If you’re after a year-round inhabited village rather than a resort, also consider Le Praz, 2km below.
Is La Tania suitable for accomplished skiers?
La Tania’s own sector is forested and rolling, perfect for progression, but this is not where the domain’s major slopes are. The appeal lies elsewhere: from the Dou des Lanches, you can reach the heights of Courchevel or Méribel via the col de la Loze in one or two lifts. Many accomplished skiers choose La Tania to sleep peacefully and ski everywhere else.
Is La Tania worth a summer visit?
Yes, provided you enjoy green, quiet mountains rather than bustle. Hikes start at the foot of the buildings, towards the hamlets or the Bouc Blanc sector. Mountain biking and trail running benefit from the marked routes of the Trois Vallées, and proximity to the Vanoise National Park puts high-altitude lakes within a day’s reach. Evenings are short, the forest does the rest.
