The right choice depends on your week. To string together descents with skis on, aim for Linga or Pré-la-Joux. For animation, restaurants and ease on foot, the centre is essential. A farm village between France and Switzerland
In Châtel, the mountain has not been smoothed: aged wood, alpine farmhouses and preserved architecture tell of a village that has remained faithful to itself.
Nestled at the head of the Vallée d’Abondance, the commune was built on agro-pastoralism before becoming a resort. This rural heritage continues to set the tone: chalets of dark wood, living traditions, a straightforward relationship with nature. The turn towards skiing came in the 1950s, when the slopes of the Morclan received their first lifts and high-altitude hotels gave rise to Super-Châtel, without the village below losing its soul.
What distinguishes Châtel is also its border: Switzerland is a few kilometres away, and one crosses by ski towards Morgins as one would visit a neighbour. From this link between the two sides was born the Portes du Soleil domain, one of the largest in the Alps. A small tourist train still connects the hamlets and their chalets, a simple way of grasping the scale of the place. Our chalets and apartments are chosen for location, view and immediate proximity to the lifts or the heart of the village.
Two seasons, one same Franco-Swiss playground
Winter
Châtel’s domain spans 1100m to 2200m around two characteristics. Super-Châtel and Barbossine, facing Switzerland, offer gentle and sunny slopes, perfect for families and progression. Linga and Pré-la-Joux, more central and north-facing, keep cold, fast snow on reds and blacks that speak to confident skiers. The Espace Liberté pass opens 120km of runs straddling the border, with direct links to Morgins and Torgon; the Portes du Soleil pass unfolds 600km connecting twelve resorts, including Avoriaz, Morzine and Les Gets. Après-ski is lived in the village, between good Savoyard tables and sunny terraces.
Summer
Summer reveals another Châtel. Lac de Vonnes, a 2-hectare body of water at 1250m, brings families together around its water sports base (kayak, canoe, paddleboard) and picnic banks. More than 90km of waymarked trails climb towards the Bassachaux pass and Swiss pastures, between panoramas and mountain refuges. Châtel has also established itself as a leading French mountain biking destination: its Bike Park, on the Pré-la-Joux and Plaine Dranse side, hooks into Europe’s largest cross-border network, extended by tree-top walks and activities for the youngest.

To ski from your doorstep, Linga and Pré-la-Joux place the technical runs in front of the door. For animation, shops and walking distance, the village centre is most practical, close to the Super-Châtel telecabin. Can you reach Switzerland by ski from Châtel?
Yes, it is the signature of the resort. The Espace Liberté domain straddles the border, with direct links to Morgins and Torgon. Beyond, the Portes du Soleil pass connects twelve French and Swiss resorts over 600km, including Avoriaz, Morzine and Les Gets. The border is crossed here as simply as a ridge.
Is Châtel worth a stay in summer?
Entirely. Lac de Vonnes and its water sports base keep families occupied, more than 90km of waymarked trails lead towards the Bassachaux pass and pastures, and Châtel’s Bike Park ranks among France’s leading mountain biking destinations. Between hiking, lake bathing and outdoor activities, the Franco-Swiss resort turns all year.
