Avoriaz sits entirely on a plateau suspended above the Morzine valley, its neighbourhoods almost legible to the naked eye from the slopes. The Festival occupies the heart of the resort: shops, restaurants, aquatic centre and cinema, the choice for lively stays and families wanting everything within reach. Les Ruches, just beside it, border the beginner zones, ski schools and the Children’s Village, making it the most reassuring neighbourhood for a first stay with young children. The Snow quarter, also central, concentrates the bars and evening life, skis on. Les Dromonts form the historic neighbourhood, that of the first wooden buildings: quieter, five minutes from the centre, near the cable-car arrival.
On the heights, Les Crozats open directly onto the slopes and reach the centre in minutes by public lifts. Les Hauts-Forts, more secluded, overlook the high-altitude sectors and lie close to the Prodains cable-car, for those who come primarily to ski and seek peace in the evening. La Falaise, near the station entrance and car parks, plays the panorama and tranquillity card whilst remaining within walking distance of shops. Amara, the most recent development, offers contemporary architecture, direct access from the car park and proximity to beginner zones. A wooden resort perched on the cliff edge
Here, no car climbs: you move by ski, on foot, by tracked vehicle or horse-drawn sleigh, through streets that remain snow-covered all winter.
Avoriaz was born of an avant-garde project by Gérard Brémond and architect Jacques Labro, whose first building opened at Christmas 1966. Labro turned his back on the mountain urbanism of the time to design wooden volumes with irregular edges, positioned according to sun, views and slope. The façades extend the rock rather than sitting upon it, and the resort seems to have grown at the edge of the void, at 1800m. This so-called organic architecture is today recognised as a major achievement of twentieth-century architectural heritage, and the Hôtel des Dromonts, the resort’s first building, remains its most evident landmark.
The choice of entirely car-free streets is not mere scenery, it changes the nature of a stay. You leave your car at the resort entrance or in the valley, reach your accommodation by ski, sleigh or on foot, and won’t touch it again for the week. Children circulate alone from one building to another, the sound of engines disappears, and the domain begins at your door: from the plateau, you slip between French and Swiss side without ever taking the wheel again. Our chalets and apartments are chosen for location, views and ease of access, to both the slopes and the pedestrian heart of the resort.
A plateau that lives its two seasons
Winter
Avoriaz occupies a central position within the Portes du Soleil, more than 600km of slopes linking twelve French and Swiss resorts. The Hauts-Forts sector peaks at 2466m and offers the domain’s longest black runs; further on, Pas de Chavanette, nicknamed the Swiss Wall, maintains its reputation as a very steep pitch at the border. The resort is also a freestyle reference with the snowparks at Arare and Chapelle, and The Stash, designed with Burton, where wooden modules hide in the Lindarets forest. Beginners, meanwhile, stay at the heart of the plateau, steps from ski schools. Après-ski happens without transfer: you return skis on down to your building’s base.
Summer
In summer, the same domain becomes one of Europe’s largest mountain-bike terrains. Avoriaz’s bike park lines up nineteen descent trails, from flow to highly technical, plus enduro loops and e-MTB trails; the most enduring link together the Portes du Soleil circuit over several days. On foot, more than forty marked routes cross the massif between alpine pastures, streams and waterfalls. Below, Lac de Montriond is suitable for swimming and shoreline walks in the shadow of the cliffs, Cascade d’Ardent marks the valley entrance, and the Lindarets hamlet, known for its free-roaming goats, is reached by the Ardent cable-car when it runs in season.

How do you reach your accommodation in a car-free resort?
You leave your car at the car parks at the resort entrance, or in the valley at Prodains, at the base of the cable-car that reaches Avoriaz in minutes. From there, you reach your accommodation on foot, by tracked vehicle or horse-drawn sleigh depending on the neighbourhood and luggage volume. Free shuttles link Morzine and the Prodains sector. Travelling light and using easy-to-carry bags greatly simplifies arrival.
Is Avoriaz worth visiting in summer?
Yes, provided you enjoy the great outdoors rather than resort animation. The resort is one of the gateways to the Alps’ largest mountain-bike domain, with bike park, enduro loops and e-MTB trails, and the massif is equally well explored on foot. Lac de Montriond, Cascade d’Ardent and the Lindarets hamlet are visited as day trips, and the car-free plateau remains a rare setting for family holidays.
