Plage de la Mala: the Cap-d'Ail cove that must be earned on foot

First, a useful clarification: Plage de la Mala is not in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat or Èze, but in the municipality of Cap-d’Ail, wedged between Monaco and Èze-Bord-de-Mer. It is one of the rare coves on the Riviera that must be earned; no road descends to it, only two pedestrian accesses.

This access constraint explains everything: visitor numbers remain limited even in July, the setting has retained its authenticity, and the approach walk forms part of the experience.

Two accesses, two walking times

The first is quick but steep: the descent via the Mala stairs, from the namesake lane, passes the illustrious Eden villa and several Belle Époque residences. Allow roughly ten minutes down, longer on the way up, irregular steps, dry descent.

The second is longer but considerably more rewarding: the Cap-d’Ail coastal path, which connects Plage Marquet to Plage Mala over 3.6km. Allow approximately 1.5 hours on foot. The path is dotted with interpretation panels, passes through rare Mediterranean flora, traces the gardens of Belle Époque villas and runs near an ancient millstone quarry whose history remains partly enigmatic.

A path that closes in poor weather

An important detail for those planning the walk: the coastal path has thirteen safety barriers that municipal staff close whenever the sea becomes rough or the wind strengthens. It is advisable to check conditions with the Cap-d’Ail town hall before setting out, especially between November and March. If the path is closed, access remains possible via the stairs.

The character of the cove

The beach is nestled in limestone rocks where fine sand and smooth pebbles mingle. The water is particularly clear, south-east orientation ensures sunshine from the morning, and visual isolation from the coastal road confers an atmosphere of private bay. Two beach establishments operate in season; the majority of the cove remains public.

When to visit

Visitor numbers increase in July and August but remain incommensurate with Monaco’s main beach or Larvotto. June and September offer water still at (or already at) 22-23°C, without the crowds. May and October suit the coastal walk and swimming for those accustomed to cooler conditions. In winter, the walk remains possible when the path is open, but swimming is not realistic.
