Serre Chevalier is not a resort but a valley, a succession of villages strung along the Guisane between Briançon and the Col du Lautaret. Chantemerle, at the foot of Grand Serre Che, is the most functional: skis on, peaceful, oriented towards sport and relaxation rather than nightlife. Villeneuve, between the two old villages, combines commerce with a touch more activity, offering a good compromise for families and couples who want slope access without sacrificing village life. Le Monêtier-les-Bains, upstream, is the most unspoilt: a heart of stone, narrow streets, hot springs and gateway to the Parc national des Écrins. Briançon, downstream, adds to the domain its Vauban citadel perched above, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The choice is therefore less about an address than about how to live your week. Want to put your skis on downstairs and chain descents together: head for Chantemerle or Villeneuve. Seeking the charm of an old village, a thermal bath at day’s end and silence: head up to Le Monêtier. Love returning in the evening to a historic town and dining beneath ramparts: Briançon awaits. Tell us how you live your holidays, and we’ll point you towards the right neighbourhood. Stays are booked by the week, the calendar and availability shown are accurate, and booking is online.

The spirit of Serre Chevalier

The sunshine of Briançonnais, the soul of stone villages

Here, high mountain living is on a human scale: ancient hamlets, larch forests stretching to the horizon, and that clear light that the Briançonnais knows better than anywhere.

The Guisane valley owes much to its geography. Backed by Briançonnais, one of the sunniest corners of the Alps, it has retained villages that existed long before skiing. Le Monêtier was already welcoming guests to its warm waters, Briançon stood watch over five valleys from its promontory. When Vauban designed the upper city in the early 18th century, he encircled the town with nearly 3km of ramparts and crowned the heights with fortifications; the ensemble today stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site, a rare testament to military mountain architecture.

From this heritage, Serre Chevalier has retained an understated elegance: one skis amongst larches, strolls through stone-built lanes, ends the day in warm water rather than noise. It is a mountain of true villages, where luxury lies in location and view rather than display. Our chalets and apartments are selected for their location, views and swift access to slopes and old village hearts alike.

Through the year

Winter in glorious sunshine, summer at the gates of the Écrins

Winter

Serre Chevalier has nearly 250km of interconnected runs, spanning roughly 1200m to 2800m and spread across four sectors, Briançon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Le Monêtier, all covered by a single lift pass. The domain’s signature is larch-forest skiing: sheltered runs, sometimes technical, precious when the weather turns, extended higher by broad open north-facing spaces that hold snow well. Beginners, families and strong skiers all find their level without losing rhythm. At day’s end, Le Monêtier offers the gentlest après-ski imaginable: the Grands Bains and their warm waters.

Summer

In summer, the valley becomes one of the most complete playgrounds in the southern Alps. The lifts reopen to carry mountain bikes to the summit, and trails lead towards the lakes and valleys of the Parc national des Écrins, of which Le Monêtier is one gateway, from the family-friendly Lac de la Douche to wilder itineraries. Hiking, mountain biking, via ferrata, canyoning and paragliding fill the days, before a final dip in the Grands Bains du Monêtier, open much of the year. And Briançon is never far away for an evening in the Vauban citadel.

Frequently asked questions

Renting at Serre Chevalier: what you ask us

Which village to choose at Serre Chevalier?

It depends on your priorities. Chantemerle and Villeneuve offer direct slope access and shops, perfect for plenty of skiing and family accommodation. Le Monêtier-les-Bains appeals to those seeking the charm of an old village, hot springs and peace, at the gates of the Écrins. Briançon, downstream, adds a proper historic town at the foot of the domain. Tell us your plans and our team will point you towards the right area.

Can you ski the entire domain on one pass?

Yes. The four sectors, Briançon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Le Monêtier, are linked by lifts and covered by the grand domain pass. From any of the villages, you can reach the other sectors on skis and cover all the interconnected runs in a day.

Is Serre Chevalier worth a summer stay?

Absolutely. The valley enjoys one of the best sunshine records in the Alps and gives access to the Parc national des Écrins via Le Monêtier-les-Bains. Hikes to lakes and valleys, mountain biking on lift-served trails, via ferrata, canyoning and paragliding, then relaxation at the Grands Bains: the programme is as rich as winter, with more spread-out visitor numbers.

How does booking work?
