Speed Mountain at Menuires: rail-mounted luge over 1km long at 35-45 km/h

A full-scale rail-mounted luge

Speed Mountain is a fixed-rail luge (distinct from a freestyle luge such as snowtubing): you sit in an individual or two-person carriage, trigger the start, and the carriage descends by gravity along a metal rail, controlled by the pilot via a brake.

Technical specifications:

Over 1km descent.

Maximum speed around 35-45 km/h.

Capacity 1 or 2 passengers per carriage (one child with an adult or an adult alone).

Open year-round (weather permitting), particularly popular in winter but also operational during the summer season.

Safety and access

The system is controlled by a brake activated by each user at their discretion. Maximum speed is limited by the rail design, and automatic braking is triggered in the event of a fall or obstacle.

Access:

Minimum age 3 years (accompanied by an adult).

Minimum age to pilot alone: 8 years.

No particular qualification or equipment required (the luge provides everything).

Pricing

Standard tariffs (to be confirmed on-site):

Single descent: around €10-12.

Package of 5 or 10 descents purchased together: from €40-80.

Reductions according to season and stay passes.

When to visit

The attraction is operational in winter (ski season, December to April) and in summer (June to September). Peak hours: 2pm-5pm, particularly during school holidays.

To avoid queues, aim for the morning (10am-12pm) or late afternoon.
