Plage de la Brune at Veyrier-du-Lac: practical information

The Plage de la Brune, at Veyrier-du-Lac on the eastern shore of Lake Annecy, is not the best-known of Annecy’s beaches, but it is among the highest-rated. It holds the Blue Flag, an international environmental label awarded annually to beaches whose bathing water, cleanliness and facilities meet strict criteria, regularly monitored. The beach features on the official Blue Flag registry, and it remains relatively sheltered from the heavy tourist flows of Annecy-le-Vieux.

The setting: eastern shore, facing the town

The beach sits on the eastern shore of the lake, at the foot of the Veyrier uplands (Mont Veyrier at 1294m just behind), with a full westerly outlook over the town of Annecy. This orientation makes all the difference: you have afternoon sun, the lake reflecting the colours of the sky, and the dramatic backdrop of the peaks opposite.

The main arc comprises a grass beach interspersed with a sand bar at the water’s edge. The lake bed slopes gently, making it a beach suited to children and occasional swimmers, unlike other beaches with steep entries.

Access: bicycle, shuttle or car

Three arrival options:

By bicycle from central Annecy along the eastern shore cycle path, taking 20 to 25 minutes. This is the most agreeable option in summer to avoid driving (the dedicated green way follows the western shore of the lake).

The free shuttle operated by Sibra from central Annecy, in July and August. Several departures daily, ideal for visitors without bicycles.

By car, with paid parking from 1 May to 15 September (€2 per hour), which fills quickly in peak season. Parking is factored into the average cost of a half-day at the beach.

Facilities and services

Beach access is free and unrestricted, open year-round. Lifeguard supervision operates in July, August, from 11 am to 7 pm.

On site:

Children’s play area, showers and facilities.

Snack bar and restaurant, open in season, with light refreshments available.

Free floating wheelchair for people with reduced mobility, facilitating access to the water.

The Blue Flag certification guarantees excellent bathing water quality (regular analysis during the season), proper waste management, well-maintained facilities, bathing supervision and accessible access for all. The label is awarded annually.

When to visit

July, August remains the peak season: water at 22-24°C, heavy footfall, shuttle in operation.

For those wishing to avoid crowds, June and the first half of September are the best times: the water is still swimmable (around 20°C), the beach less crowded, and parking accessible without difficulty.

In winter, the beach remains open, favoured by walkers and cyclists for contemplative pauses. Swimming becomes impossible, of course, but Lake Annecy partially frozen (rare but possible some years) presents the site in a different light.

Three other nearby beaches

Plage de la Brune lends itself to a walking or cycling route combining several swimming spots:

At 1.5km north on the same shore, Plage des Marquisats within Annecy itself, more urban and livelier.

At 2km south, the Sevrier municipal beach, on the opposite shore, accessible via the lake circuit.

At 4km south-east, Plage de Talloires, more secluded, favoured for its intimate setting.
