Scandola from Calvi: A cruise to the UNESCO Reserve and Girolata

Updated on 5 October 2026 4 min read

The Scandola Nature Reserve has been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1983, within the natural site of the Gulf of Porto (along with Girolata and the Calanques de Piana). From Calvi, it is the most sought-after sea excursion in Balagne. There are three main formats, ranging from a short 4-hour tour to a full 7-hour tour including the Calanques de Piana.

UNESCO since 1983: what this protects

The Scandola Nature Reserve was created in 1975 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. The listing covers:

The Scandola peninsula, a series of spectacular red volcanic cliffs descending into the sea.

The village of Girolata, a fishing hamlet accessible only by boat or on foot via a mountain path (no road access).

The Calanques de Piana, further south, renowned for their eroded rocks sculpted into extraordinary shapes.

The Scandola reserve itself, managed by the Parc naturel régional de Corse, covers approximately 1700 hectares of land and sea. It is one of the Mediterranean’s first protected marine reserves.

02

Three cruise formats departing from Calvi

Several operators (Giru Mare, Calvi Aventure, Calvi Évasion) offer excursions from Calvi harbour:

4-hour format (departure 14:30): Scandola only, skirting the red cliffs, marine caves, no landing. From €85 per adult.

6-hour format (departure 08:30 or 14:30): Scandola + stop at Girolata with lunch at leisure in the village (approximately 1.5 hours). From €110 per adult.

Full-day format, approximately 7 hours: Scandola + Girolata + Calanques de Piana, covering the entire UNESCO site in one day. From approximately €130 per adult.

03

The boats and passenger capacity

Access to the reserve is being regulated (permits and quotas under development). Depending on the operator, you board either a 12-seater semi-rigid boat or a larger vessel.

Practical consequence: booking is compulsory and must be made several days in advance during peak season (July-August), often a week ahead. In low season (May-June, September), the day before usually suffices.

04

What you see at sea

The red cliffs of Scandola are of volcanic origin (rhyolite), dating back 250 million years, and have been sculpted by marine erosion into tafoni (cavities characteristic of the west Corsican coast) and marine caves.

Marine biodiversity is exceptional:

The osprey (Pandion haliaetus), the reserve’s emblematic raptor, nests in the cliffs and hunts over the water’s surface. High observation probability in season.

Shags, Yelkouan shearwaters and other seabirds.

Underwater, posidonia meadows in excellent condition, groupers in rocky depths, and occasionally dolphins or loggerhead turtles.

Girolata: a world apart

The village of Girolata is one of only a few hamlets in mainland France with no road access. Access is solely by:

Boat from Calvi, Porto or Cargèse.

Foot, via the postman’s path from Col de la Croix (1.5 hours descent, 2 hours uphill).

A few dozen residents year-round, several restaurants and holiday lettings for visitors in season. The hamlet retains its authentic character precisely because the absence of a road prevents any motorised development.

06

When to visit

June and September offer the finest conditions: calm seas, clear skies, modest visitor numbers, and the possibility of observing ospreys brooding or with their young.

July-August: peak season, booking required well ahead, seas sometimes rough from the libecciu wind mid-day.

May and October: outings possible depending on weather, water cooler, far fewer visitors.

Cancellations are possible in rough seas; check with the operator the day before.

Planning a stay in Calvi

AEC Collection selects and represents fine villas and apartments in Calvi and Balagne. Cruises to Scandola are booked via the operators’ websites or directly at the harbour. The 6-hour format with Girolata is the best compromise for a first visit.
