Palombaggia from Figari: 2km of white sand, pink granite and stone pines
Palombaggia beach is the iconic image of South Corsica: 2 kilometres of white sand bordered by pink granite rocks and stone pines. Just 25 minutes from Figari airport, it marks the most direct access to the south from international arrivals.
The image that travelled the world
Palombaggia is one of the most photographed and published French beaches worldwide, regularly ranked among the finest beaches in France and Europe. The visual composition is unique:
Very fine white sand that gives the shallow waters a translucent turquoise colour.
Blocks of pink granite that emerge from the sand and sea, particularly to the north-east near the main car park. Local granite takes on this rosy hue due to the presence of feldspar, a geological characteristic of south Corsica.
A forest of stone pines behind the beach, partially protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, which provides rare shade during the season.
A very gentle slope to the seabed, ideal for children and occasional swimmers.
2km of sand, two endpoints
The beach forms with its neighbour Tamaricciu an arc of 2 kilometres between:
Punta Cerbicale to the north, which marks the endpoint on the Porto-Vecchio side.
Punta di Colombara to the south, more discreet, which opens towards the coves of Tamaricciu and beyond.
The arc is divided into several sections, some very busy (centre), others quieter (southern ends). For those wishing to avoid crowds, a short walk south of the main car park makes a marked difference to visitor numbers.
Access: from Figari, from Porto-Vecchio
Two main routes:
From Figari airport (FSC), approximately 25 minutes’ drive, direct access to the main car park. This is the quickest access on international arrival.
From Porto-Vecchio, 15 to 20 minutes by car: direction Bonifacio, then the Palombaggia road via Piccovaggia.
Free parking that fills quickly in season, and paid car parks closer to the beach.
Services and beach bars
Palombaggia has a full range of beach bars, unlike wilder beaches such as Saleccia:
Several private beaches with sun loungers, parasols and restaurants.
Restaurants with tables in the sand, typically offering fish dishes, Mediterranean salads and set lunches.
Water sports equipment hire (paddleboards, kayaks) on certain sections.
Reservation advised at midday in July and August for private beaches.
When to visit
High season (July-August) brings capacity crowds at midday. For comfort:
Before 11am: car park accessible, ideal light, calm water.
After 5pm: crowds thin out, golden light on the pines and rocks.
In June and September: optimal conditions, moderate crowds, water still pleasant for swimming.
Autumn and spring offer an almost deserted beach, magnificent light, ideal for photography and walking.
Combining with Bonifacio or Tamaricciu
From Palombaggia, two ways to extend your visit:
Heading south, follow the coast via Tamaricciu and continue to Bonifacio (45 minutes), to combine beach in the morning with a visit to the citadel in the afternoon.
Heading north, return to Porto-Vecchio (15 minutes), for lunch in the old town or a visit to the port.
