Plage de la Pinède (Calvi): 4km of sand beneath parasol pines facing the Citadelle

Updated on 5 October 2026 3 min read

The Plage de la Pinède is the principal beach of Calvi, in Balagne. It is a long stretch of fine sand bordered by a forest of parasol pines from which it takes its name, and whose visual setting remains one of Corsica’s most iconic: the Citadelle de Calvi rising above the gulf.

01

The setting: 4km of sand, citadelle in the background

The beach extends for nearly 4km from Calvi’s marina. It is lined with a pine forest of century-old parasol pines, which provides rare shade on Corsican beaches, particularly welcome in summer.

The sand is white and fine, the seabed slopes very gently (ideal for children and occasional swimmers), and the water has remarkable clarity in calm conditions. The panorama from the beach is unique: the Citadelle de Calvi rising on its rocky outcrop at the end of the gulf, and the mountains of Balagne in the background.

02

Access: marina, train, parking

Three access options, to be chosen according to your stay:

The Plage de la Pinède car park, accessed directly beneath the pines, with a charge in summer. It is the most straightforward option. It fills quickly during peak season.

The footpath from Calvi’s port, approximately 10 minutes’ walk along the marina. Ideal for visitors staying in the upper town or the citadelle.

The beach train (the “Tramway de la Balagne”), which serves several stops along the gulf between Calvi and L’Île-Rousse. Multiple daily services during season, with modest fares.

03

When to visit

The advantage of the beach’s length is that it absorbs visitor numbers without becoming overwhelming: even at the height of August, one can move a few hundred metres away to find space.

The best times:

Before 11am: soft light, calmer water, easy parking.

After 5pm: fewer visitors, lengthening shadows from the pines, golden light on the citadelle.

In June and September, optimal conditions (water still warm at 22-24°C, modest visitor numbers).

In the off-season, the beach remains very beautiful for walks and photography, water cooler but beach nearly deserted.

04

Dining on the beach

Several beach pavilions and restaurants line the shoreline, from the most simple to gastronomic establishments.

Several snack bars more conveniently located along the promenade, perfect for a quick sandwich.

Booking is advisable at midday in July, August, particularly at the most popular beach pavilions.

Water sports

The Pinède is one of Corsica’s best-equipped beaches for water sports:

Paddle, kayak and pedalo hire at several points along the shoreline.

Sailing and windsurfing schools, ideal for beginners thanks to the gulf’s moderate winds.

Scuba diving, with several clubs based at the port offering outings to the rocky seabeds nearby.

Water-skiing and towed buoys in season.

06

The Citadelle just above

The geographic advantage of the Pinède is that it is directly connected to the foot of the Citadelle. A twenty-minute ascent from the beach allows one to visit the Genoese Citadelle (13th, 16th century), the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and to return via the marina. A half-day itinerary that combines beach, heritage and dining at the port.
