Grand Sperone Beach (Bonifacio): 20 minutes' walk for the most unspoilt in the south

Updated on 5 October 2026 4 min read

Grand Sperone beach, at the far south of Corsica in the municipality of Bonifacio, is among those beaches one does not stumble upon by chance. It lies within the Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve, at the tip of a peninsula, and its access requires a walk of 20 to 30 minutes from the nearest car park. This barrier has made it one of the best-preserved beaches in Corsica.

01

The landscape: between golf, Roman ruins and the Lavezzi islands in view

Grand Sperone sits on the Sperone peninsula, the south-eastern tip of Corsica, where the coast faces directly towards Sardinia and the Lavezzi islands. On clear days, the Lavezzi archipelago is visible close by, and beyond it the Sardinian coast.

The beach is a crescent of very fine white sand, bordered by translucent turquoise water that slopes very gently. The sand, of an uncommon whiteness for Corsica, gives it an unmistakable “tropical” character.

Behind the beach lies wild maquis and the fairway of Sperone Golf Course (designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, among France’s most prestigious). This interplay of maquis, golf and beach is one of the site’s distinctive features.

02

Access: 20 to 30 minutes’ walk from Piantarella

No direct vehicular access: the final stretch is on foot via the coastal path. The standard route:

1. Drive to the Piantarella beach car park, some ten kilometres from Bonifacio via the D58 then D260, towards Sperone Golf Course.

2. Cross Piantarella beach, more accessible but busier.

3. Pass the Piantarella Roman ruins (remains of a Roman seaside villa occupied from the 1st to 4th century, listed as a Historic Monument).

4. Navigate the Petit Sperone cove, a smaller intermediate beach.

5. Follow the coastal path which skirts the golf course to Grand Sperone.

Allow 20 to 30 minutes’ walking depending on pace. No technical difficulty but little shade: bring a hat and water, especially in summer.

03

No facilities on site

The beach is entirely unspoilt:

No restaurant, no beach bar, no café.

No toilets, no shower.

No drinking water.

No water sports equipment rental.

This calls for straightforward planning: bring everything with you (water, food, sunshade, snorkel), and take everything away (no bins either). This absence of infrastructure is one reason the site has been so well preserved.

04

When to visit

The beach does draw visitors in high season, but the “barrier” effect of the 20-30 minute walk filters out part of the crowd:

Before 10am in peak summer, the beach is virtually to yourself.

June and the first half of September: water still warm, modest visitor numbers, path passable without extreme heat.

May and late September: perfect walking conditions, water sometimes cool but swimmable.

Out of season: the beach remains accessible year-round, wild and empty, favoured by walkers and photographers.

Precautions and nature reserve rules

The beach lies within the Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve (established in 1999, one of the Mediterranean’s most important). A few rules to observe:

No fires or barbecues.

No foraging in the maquis, no collection of shells or marine material.

Mooring of boats in front of the beach is regulated, certain zones are prohibited.

Strict respect for the reserve is what ensures the beach’s quality in the long term.

06

Combine with the Lavezzi islands

From Bonifacio port, shuttle boats depart for the Lavezzi islands visible from Sperone. This makes a complementary day excursion, allowing you to see the Sperone area from the sea and venture further within the same nature reserve.

Planning a stay in Bonifacio

AEC Collection selects and represents premium villas and apartments in Bonifacio and its gulf. Grand Sperone is 10 minutes’ drive from Bonifacio town centre (to Piantarella) plus 20-30 minutes’ walk. Everything must be planned in advance, as the beach is entirely unserviced.
