Saleccia Beach: 1km of white sand in the Désert des Agriates

Updated on 5 October 2026 4 min read

Saleccia Beach is among the most widely circulated images of Corsica, yet also one of the most difficult to access. Located in the heart of the Désert des Agriates, on the northern coast west of Saint-Florent, it stretches for more than one kilometre of white sand bordered by turquoise water. To get there: no paved road, no public transport, only a 4×4 track or a boat.

01

A film beach: “The Longest Day” in 1962

Saleccia’s fame dates from the American film “The Longest Day” (1962), which depicts the Normandy landings. With the Norman coasts already too developed at the time, the crew chose Saleccia for several landing scenes. The similarity of the sand and the scarcity of visible buildings in the background made it a perfect natural setting.

The episode brought the beach to international attention before the waves of mass beach tourism, and placed it in collective memory long before Saint-Florent became a sought-after destination.

02

The Désert des Agriates: why it has remained preserved

The Désert des Agriates is a vast expanse of 15,000 hectares of maquis, garrigue and coastline, protected by the Conservatoire du littoral since 1979. The region owes its name to its agricultural past: once a wheat granary, it was abandoned between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Today, it is one of the last wild coastal zones of the western Mediterranean. No villages, few amenities, and a protected status that forbids any major construction or development. The only access routes are ancient and deliberately remain rudimentary.

03

Reaching Saleccia: three options, three rhythms

Three possible routes, each with its own constraints:

1. The 4×4 track from Casta (D81): 12km of rocky road through the Agriates. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the journey, at a cautious pace. Since 2023, an access fee of €10 is charged at the Saleccia car park. Regulations require a vehicle with a ground clearance of more than 17cm, without a trailer.

2. The shuttle boat from Saint-Florent harbour: daily in season, departures hourly from 9am. Several companies operate the service, including Le Popeye. The direct crossing to Saleccia takes around twenty minutes; Lotu is served by a separate route.

3. Walking from Lotu: for those landing at Lotu, a coastal path connects the two beaches in around 1 hour. This is the option for walkers wanting to visit both beaches.

04

Comfort and facilities on site

Saleccia remains a natural beach: no beach facilities, no sun loungers, no restaurant with your toes in the sand. You come with your picnic, your parasol and your water.

The campsite U Paradisu, 300m from the beach, offers lunch service in season. It is the only facility in the immediate vicinity.

Mobile coverage can be weak; it is best to let people know in advance.

05

When to visit

High season (July, August) saturates the beach in mid-morning, with full shuttles and car park full by 11am. To avoid the peak:

Before 9am or after 5pm in the height of summer, you will find genuine comfort, and the light on the turquoise water at the end of the day is memorable.

June and September remain the best windows: water still warm (22-24°C), moderate crowds, less saturated shuttles.

May and October offer an almost empty beach, cooler water but soft light and marshland alive with birdsong.
