Santana Beach at Sagone: 1km of golden sand with gentle slope
The Santana beach, situated at the locality of Esigna in the commune of Coggia, approximately 1km south of Sagone, is one of the finest in the gulf, a kilometre of fine golden sand, bordered to the south by rocks and to the north by a long open beach. Access is direct from the D81 road, which runs alongside the beach in elevated position: a few parking spaces along the road, then a direct descent onto the sand.
The contrast with other beaches in the area, Sagone village, Liamone, San Giuseppe, lies in the width of the sand and the very gentle slope of the seabed: the gentle gradient allows swimmers to maintain their footing for extended periods, which reassures bathers and fundamentally changes the experience compared to beaches with steeper drop-offs.
A warning not to disregard
Before describing the beach, a point that guides often underplay: Santana is highly exposed to open sea. The Gulf of Sagone is widely open to the west, and the beach faces full force westerly swells and winds. During libecciu (the typical south-westerly Corsican wind), substantial waves form, accompanied by strong rip currents.
On days of heavy swell, swimming can become genuinely hazardous, even for strong swimmers. The beach is supervised in July and August. The local rule: assess the state of the sea before entering, and if the safety flag is orange or red, refrain from swimming, even if you are a strong swimmer. In calm conditions, however, swimming is excellent and the water quality exceptional.
Layout: free access, minimal facilities
The beach is freely accessible for virtually its entire length. A few restaurants and snack bars punctuate the shoreline, notably on the northern side. Sagone Glisse, a rental establishment, offers kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pedalos and surfboards by the day. No private sunbeds lined up on the sand as on the Côte d’Azur; the character remains that of a classic Corsican beach: open sand, personal parasols, restaurant 100 metres away.
The southern section, more rocky, attracts snorkelling enthusiasts, small shoals of fish amongst the rocks, seagrass beds just offshore.
The Gulf of Sagone, context
The Gulf of Sagone is one of the major open gulfs on the west Corsican coast, bordered to the north by the Cargèse point and to the south by Feno cape. It comprises several beaches, Sagone village, Liamone, San Giuseppe, Santana, which succeed one another along the gulf. Santana is amongst the longest and most natural; Sagone village is the liveliest, with a pleasure port and restaurants.
The area remains residential and coastal in character, with no large hotel complexes or legendary beach clubs as found on the Côte d’Azur. This is one of the area’s assets for those seeking an accessible, family-friendly Corsica.
When to visit
July and August remains peak season, but Santana absorbs the numbers thanks to its length. Mornings before 11am are the quietest, the light on the sand is superb and the sea generally calmer than mid-afternoon. May to June and September offer an excellent compromise: water still at (or already at) 20-22°C, moderate crowds, less risk of strong wind than in high summer.
