Cupabia Beach: the great wild bay of northern Valinco
Cupabia Bay remains one of the finest beaches on Corsica’s west coast, still relatively sheltered from the major tourist flows. Shared between Serra-di-Ferro and Coti-Chiavari but considerably more accessible from the Valinco, it is a vast expanse of white sand extending into small rocky coves, bordered by dense vegetation of maquis and umbrella pines that descend almost to the shoreline.
The limpid blue water, the gradual seabed depth and discreet facilities make it a beach particularly appreciated by regulars, a bay that has retained its wild character where others have given way to intensive tourist development.
Access: via the D155 from Serra-di-Ferro
The simplest access to Cupabia is by the D155 departmental road, from Serra-di-Ferro (Valinco side) or by taking the coastal road from Propriano. There is theoretically an access via Coti-Chiavari, but the route is longer and less frequented.
A car park is provided in immediate proximity to the shoreline, overlooking the beach. It then takes a few minutes on foot to descend to the sand. Car park saturation in July, August is frequent, particularly in early afternoon; arrival in the morning is strongly recommended.
One bay, two atmospheres
The bay offers two atmospheres.
The northern section is the longest and most open; this is where families concentrate, in the shade of the pines in the background, and the restaurant at the A Cala di Cupabia campsite. The southern section, more secluded, attracts those seeking tranquillity.
The seabed: sand, posidonia, clear waters
Entry into the sea is gradual, the bottom remains sandy for the first several dozen metres, which reassures swimmers with children. Further out, the posidonia seagrass bed begins, which partly explains the optical quality of the water: posidonia filters, binds sand and protects against erosion.
For those fond of snorkelling, the lateral rocks and the edge of the rocky outcrops offer a decent observation zone, shoals of small fish, starfish, occasionally some bream.
Propriano
Travel Book AEC CollectionContext: the Valinco gulf
Cupabia is one of the northern beaches of the Valinco gulf, which extends from Campomoro headland in the south to the vicinity of Serra-di-Ferro. This gulf is one of the largest in South Corsica and one of the least developed. Propriano, the hub town of Valinco (approximately thirty minutes’ drive away), remains on a human scale, with its port, restaurants and access to local markets.
The hinterland leads to the hilltop villages of Taravo and Alta Rocca, and further to the Bavella Needles, which add a mountain dimension to beach days.
When to visit
Like most Corsican beaches, Cupabia is crowded in July, August in the middle of the day. Mornings before 11am or late afternoon (after 5pm) are the quietest slots in high season. May, June and September remain the best compromise: water still (or already) at 20-22°C, moderate crowds, pine shade sufficient for the hottest hours.
