Calanque de Sormiou: the sandy beach, the cabins and Le Château, open since 1948

The setting: 6km south of Marseille, two limestone cliffs

The calanque opens onto the Mediterranean some ten kilometres south of Marseille’s centre, in the 9th arrondissement. White cliffs, rising approximately 250 metres, frame a cove of several hundred metres, with sandy bed and turquoise water on calm days. It is one of three calanques on the coast with an accessible sandy beach, the others being predominantly shingle and rock.

Behind the beach stands a hundred or so cabins, a legacy of the twentieth century. Originally, these shelters served fishermen from the neighbouring village of Mazargues to store nets and equipment, and from the 1900s onwards, their use gradually became seasonal residential. The cabins are passed down from generation to generation, and their land status does not permit conventional buying and selling, which has preserved the site’s architecture.

Le Château and Le Lunch: two restaurants, one history

Two historic establishments long defined Sormiou. Le Château, opened in 1948 by Rose and Titin Martin, occupies the only proper stone building in the calanque, owned by the Countess Marie de Sormiou (Marie Buret, a friend of Mistral), who had it built in 1894. The building has borne the name “Château” since that time, given by local fishermen in contrast to the cabins. The Rambaldy family has run it since 1980.

Le Lunch, formerly the Belle-Vue, situated some fifty metres lower on the beach, reached its peak in the late 1990s under chef Christophe Negrel. It was destroyed in 2017 in application of the Loi Littoral, and is today the only one of the two historic establishments to have disappeared. The restaurant that remains today is Le Château.

How to get there in 2026

The rule is straightforward: in summer, the road is closed to vehicles. From 1 June to 30 September, vehicular access is prohibited all day. Spring (April and May) introduces partial closures, generally at weekends and public holidays, from 7am to 7pm.

To walk there, two main starting points:

From the Baumettes car park, allow 1 to 1.5 hours of walking depending on the route.

From the Col de Sormiou (high-altitude car park), a more direct descent of 45 minutes, though with a climb back at the end of the day.

The calanque also lies on the route of the GR98, which connects Callelongue (to the east) to Cassis (to the west).

Summer: watch for closure of the massifs

From 1 June to 30 September, pedestrian access to the massif is also subject to a prefectural order linked to weather and fire risk. The status is verified each day on the website “mybouchesdurhone.fr”, which publishes a colour code by massif:

green or yellow = access permitted;

orange = access between 6am and 11am only;

red = access prohibited all day.

During the highest-risk periods (heatwaves, drought, mistral winds), red is frequently declared, and pedestrian access is suspended. This is why it is advisable to plan an outing early, around 7am, and to have a contingency plan.

Going by boat: another perspective

Numerous shuttle services from the Vieux-Port in Marseille, from Pointe-Rouge or from Cassis offer passage along the calanque, some with a swimming stop. This is an option that circumvents terrestrial access constraints, but Sormiou is discovered from the sea, without the experience of the cabins or the path. The two approaches complement rather than substitute for each other.
