Alta Lumina at Les Gets: a nocturnal journey by Moment Factory

Behind Alta Lumina

The project is the work of Moment Factory, a multimedia studio from Montréal that has created the Lumina series of nocturnal forest journeys, deployed over several years across a dozen sites worldwide (Canada, United States, Japan, Singapore, Europe).

Alta Lumina, opened to the public on 11 July 2020, was the first immersive journey of its kind in Europe. Success was immediate: more than 250,000 visitors have since followed the path, a figure far exceeding initial projections, and one which has established Alta Lumina as one of Les Gets’ defining attractions, both in and out of season.

The narrative of the journey

The scenario is deliberately dreamlike, without spoken dialogue: you follow the voyage of a wandering musician and his hot-air balloon across mountains. The journey comprises a succession of tableaux, a sonic clearing, inhabited woodland, a panoramic scene, each constructed around a distinct visual or interactive effect.

Allow approximately one hour to walk the kilometre path at a measured pace. Contemplative stops are built into the design; rushing undermines the experience.

The technical apparatus

What distinguishes Alta Lumina from traditional light installations lies in the technical apparatus concealed within it. Projection mapping on trees and ground, multichannel sound distributed in zones, interaction sensors (the visitor’s footstep triggers effects), careful use of night-time lighting to preserve the perception of the forest itself rather than drowning it in colour. This restraint is what justifies Moment Factory’s standing: the studio knows when not to illuminate.

When to visit: seasonality

Alta Lumina operates according to distinct opening seasons, primarily winter and summer, with some shoulder-season windows. Hours vary depending on sunset time: departure towards late afternoon in winter, later in summer. Advance booking is generally necessary during high season, with staggered entry slots to prevent congestion on the path.

The journey is accessible to families and designed for a broad audience, though not exclusively for children despite its narrative dimension.

Attire and conditions

The path is outdoors, in woodland: bring clothing appropriate to the season (warm in winter, waterproof in uncertain weather), closed shoes, and accept that weather is part of the experience. The path is marked and secure, but night in the forest remains night in the forest; the absence of public lighting between tableaux is an integral component of the design.
