Helicopter transfer from Geneva to Courchevel: flight time, dates and hours

Updated on 27 October 2026 9 min read

Two hours by road, or half an hour in the air: between Geneva airport and Courchevel, the helicopter changes the whole day of arrival. You step off the plane, fly over the Alps to the Tarentaise and land at the altiport, at 2007m, before the children have finished asking whether it is much further. Provided, that is, everything connects. Three rules decide what is possible on the day itself, and hardly anyone explains them.

Geneva to Courchevel by helicopter, at a glance

  • Flight time: about half an hour in the air, against 2h by road for 179km.
  • Dates: all year round as a private flight, mainly during the ski season, from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 this winter.
  • Departure: Geneva airport, on the Swiss side, or the Archamps heliport, on the French side, a quarter of an hour away by car.
  • Arrival: Courchevel altiport, at 2007m, 2km south of the resort.
  • Hours: daylight only, in principle from 9am to 7pm, and under visual flight rules.
  • Customs: 24h notice for a flight from Switzerland, which the operator files for you.

At Geneva: the airport or Archamps

It all depends on how you arrive. On a private jet, you will usually land at the business aviation terminal, T3, on chemin des Papillons, where ground handling companies look after passengers and luggage. On a scheduled flight, you come out at the main terminal, or at terminal 2, which the airport opens only at weekends in winter for some of the ski charter and scheduled flights; the operator’s driver waits for you at the exit.

The helicopter itself does not always leave from the airport. Slots there are limited, and several operators take off, depending on availability, either from the airport or from the Archamps heliport, just across the border, a quarter of an hour away by road. The detour has one advantage: leaving from France, the flight to Courchevel is a domestic one. Either way, keep your passport to hand, as operators ask for ID even within the Schengen area. If you hold a Russian passport, the visa and arriving via Geneva are covered on our page on visas for France and Switzerland with a Russian passport.

Dates: all year round, mostly in winter

Courchevel altiport is open all year, and a private flight can be arranged in any season, in daylight and weather permitting. Even so, it is winter that keeps the route going: operators concentrate their transfers on the ski season, when the resort is open, from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027 this winter. The individual seats sold by Blade run only from roughly mid-December to mid-April. In high season, from December to March, the platform advises booking one to two weeks ahead; for Saturdays in the school holidays, when guests arrive in their chalets, it pays to book earlier still.

Three rules that decide everything

The altiport clock. Courchevel takes flights in daylight only, in principle from 9am to 7pm, and night flights are banned. In December and January the sun sets between 4.50pm and 5.40pm, and darkness falls half an hour later: it is the dark, more than the opening hours, that sets the time of the last flight. A plane landing in Geneva in the late afternoon therefore puts that day’s transfer in doubt, and the road or a night in town takes over.

Visual flight. The altiport has no instrument approach procedure: the pilot has to be able to see the mountain. A clear sky over Lake Geneva tells you nothing about the Tarentaise; what matters is the cloud ceiling over the Courchevel valley, and a snowfall is enough to close the door.

Customs. The altiport has no permanent customs post. For a flight from Switzerland, officers come out on request, made 24h in advance, and flights from outside the Schengen area are not allowed in. The operator handles the request, but it explains why a transfer has to be booked ahead, and why leaving from Archamps makes life simpler.

Who flies, and in what

On this route, the company selling the flight is not always the one flying it. Blade, very prominent in search results, describes itself as a broker: its flights to Courchevel are operated by Héli Sécurité, which has one base at the altiport and another at Archamps. Monacair flies from the airport or from Archamps. Swiftcopters is based at Geneva airport itself, Alpes Hélicoptères and Jet Systems have bases at Courchevel, and Mont Blanc Hélicoptères counts Geneva among its departure points. The tourist office and the town hall keep an up-to-date list of the companies operating at the altiport.

The most common aircraft carry five passengers plus a pilot; larger twin-engine machines are available on request. Most flights are private charters, although Blade also advertises individual seats on this route in winter. Luggage is the real constraint: with Alpes Hélicoptères, the Bell 407 takes two suitcases in the hold, three in the cabin and a ski basket. Declare everything when you book, including the number of bags and ski bags; whatever does not fit goes up by car.

The plane, the other shortcut

A jet cannot land at Courchevel: the runway at Courchevel altiport, short and sloping, is reserved for helicopters and propeller aircraft of 5.7 tonnes or less. Alpine Airlines flies twin-engine propeller planes there, chartered as private flights. The airline quotes 18 minutes’ flying time from Geneva, a quarter of an hour from Chambéry and 25 minutes from Lyon, and says it is the only company authorised to fly passengers in there by plane. The same rules on daylight, weather and customs apply.

If the weather says no

When the forecast is poor, operators offer the road in advance. And once you are in the air, the captain can still abandon the flight or divert to another airfield. Plan B comes down to one figure: 179km and 2h by car according to the tourist office, longer on the busy changeover Saturdays.

Two precautions will spare you unpleasant surprises. Book the back-up car at the same time as the flight, or ask the operator how it arranges one. And read the cancellation terms: with some operators, a flight cancelled by the client less than fifteen days before departure is payable in full.

At the altiport: the last few kilometres

The helicopter lands at the altiport, never outside the chalet: in the mountains, the law forbids dropping leisure passengers anywhere other than at an aerodrome. The airfield lies 2km south of Courchevel 1850, with its two reception chalets. A free shuttle bus links it to the resort in winter, but with luggage, the chauffeur-driven car most operators offer remains the simplest way to finish the journey. The nearby Jardin Alpin area puts some chalets a few minutes from the runway.

AEC tip. Give us your landing time in Geneva as soon as you book the chalet. Before midday, that day’s transfer stands every chance; on a winter’s late afternoon, it is better to plan on the road, or to save the helicopter for the journey home.

Where to stay

Our chalets in Courchevel 1850, the village closest to the altiport, and those across the Courchevel valley are grouped by resort. To choose between 1850, 1650 and 1550, see our guide to the Courchevel villages; for train and road, our guide to getting to Courchevel; and for Méribel, Megève or Val d’Isère, our guide to private jets and helicopters to the ski resorts.

The simplest thing is to write to us: give us your dates, your arrival time and the number of guests, and our agents will suggest chalets that suit your arrival.

And on the first evening, from the terrace, you see the valley you flew over that afternoon, lighting up one village after another.
