Pietracorbara Beach: 450m of fine sand on the eastern coast of Cap Corse
Pietracorbara beach, some ten kilometres north of Erbalunga on the eastern coast of Cap Corse, is one of the very few beaches of fine sand on the Cap. A stretch of 450 metres facing turquoise waters, with a more authentic family atmosphere than the large beaches of southern Corsica. A discreet alternative to Saleccia for those wishing to avoid the crowds.
A geological rarity: sand on Cap Corse
Cap Corse, a peninsula of schist north of Bastia, is essentially composed of rocky coastline and pebble coves. Pietracorbara beach is one of the very few beaches of fine sand on the eastern coast, born from an alluvial valley that has carried sediments and fine sands from the inner massif (Monte Alticcione, 1139m) down to the sea.
The visual effect is striking: translucent turquoise water, white sand, a very gentle slope descending gradually. The beach is compared by some visitors to Caribbean lagoons, a comparison that becomes excessive in high summer when the beach hinterland regains its typical Mediterranean vegetation.
450m, more visitors but no overcrowding
The beach stretches for approximately 450 metres, which allows it to absorb summer visitors without becoming overcrowded. Even at peak 15 August, one can easily find space to lay down a towel, provided you arrive before 11am.
The atmosphere is very family-oriented: families from Bastia and mainland France, few partygoers or loud scenes. The beach is closer to the spirit of “traditional Corsican seaside” than the trendy beaches of Porto-Vecchio.
Access and facilities
Direct access by car:
From Erbalunga, 15 minutes via the D80, the coastal road that runs along the eastern coast of the Cap.
From Bastia, 30 minutes in total.
Several free car parks along the beach, which is rare on the Cap’s beaches (most have remote parking with a walk). In high season, car parks fill up by 11am; it is best to arrive early.
On site:
Several beach shacks offering light refreshments and sunbed/parasol rentals.
Bars and restaurants for lunch.
The facilities are standard for a seaside location, without the luxury standard of the Côte d’Azur’s private beaches, which contributes to the relaxed atmosphere of the place.
The hinterland: a cap still unspoilt
Pietracorbara is not just a beach: it is also a valley that stretches 8km inland, with seven historic hamlets (Oreta, Cortina, Lapedina…) and hiking trails that lead up to Monte Alticcione.
A morning beach visit followed by an afternoon hike is easy to arrange from the beach car park. Several marked trails connect the hamlets.
When to visit
June and September: ideal conditions (water at 22-24°C, moderate visitor levels).
July-August: high season, plan ahead for parking and lunch.
May and October: beach is nearly deserted, cooler water, soft light for photography.
Out of season: the beach remains accessible year-round for walks, particularly appreciated in autumn for its golden light.
Nearby: Erbalunga harbour, Macinaggio
The classic itinerary combines Pietracorbara with:
Erbalunga harbour, 15 minutes to the south: fishing village, fine dining restaurants, authentic atmosphere of Cap Corse.
Macinaggio, 30 minutes to the north: major marina, starting point for the Customs Officers’ Trail that reaches Centuri via the coastal path.
Saint-Florent, further west on the other coast, to combine both sides of the Cap in a single day.
