Husky sledding in Megève

7 min read

A team of huskies stamping impatiently before departure, silence falling as the dogs find their rhythm, snow flying beneath the runners: in Megève, husky sledding is experienced as an introduction, seated in the sledge whilst a musher leads the pack. Here is where to try it in the resort, how an outing unfolds, and where to venture nearby for a sunset facing Mont-Blanc or to drive your own team.

Husky sledding in practice

  • In Megève: sledging introduction with Evolution 2, along the crests of the ski area or on the Mont d’Arbois golf course.
  • Season 2026-2027: from 18 December 2026 to 10 April 2027, daily from 9am to 3pm, subject to snow conditions.
  • Age and capacity: from 2 years old; one or two passengers per sledge on the crests, up to three on the golf course including one child under 6 years old.
  • Duration: approximately twenty minutes sledging, preceded by a meeting with the dogs.
  • Booking: compulsory, through Evolution 2 Megève.

Two locations in Megève: the crests and the golf course

The only operator referenced by the tourist office in the resort, Evolution 2, offers the introduction at two sites. Along the crests of the ski area, snow is guaranteed throughout the season: skiers join the activity at the top of the Alpette chairlift, walkers ascend via the Rochebrune cable car or the Chamois cabin lift to the summit of Caboche, then walk for approximately forty minutes on snowshoes. A walker’s pass is required in this case.

The Mont d’Arbois golf course, more gentle, suits introductions for younger children: up to three can travel in the sledge, including one child under 6 years old. Its snow cover is not guaranteed throughout the season, however.

How an introduction unfolds

The outing begins with a meeting of the pack: about ten minutes to get to know the huskies before departure. There follows approximately twenty minutes of sledging, seated and well settled, whilst the musher leads from the runners. On the crests, a sledge carries one or two passengers, within a limit of 170kg. Please arrive a quarter of an hour before departure.

The introduction is suitable from 2 years old. It is, however, forbidden for pregnant women.

The AEC view. For a family introduction with a very young child, favour the Mont d’Arbois golf course when snow conditions permit: the operator presents it as ideal for an introduction, and three can share the sledge. Keep the crests for older children, who will appreciate the cabin lift ascent and the views.

Half-day, full day and skier packages

Beyond the introduction, Evolution 2 offers a polar expedition of a half-day and a full day, which combine sledging and a snowshoe outing with a guide, with the possibility of a meal at altitude. Skiers have their own package, at the top of the Alpette chairlift, to fit a sledging sortie into a day’s skiing.

A sunset facing Mont-Blanc, on the Saint-Gervais side

On the other side of the Évasion Mont-Blanc domain, the musher Antarctic Road departs from the Croix plateau, facing Mont-Blanc. It is reached via the Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce chairlift, or on skis from the Saint-Gervais and Megève domain. Its premium package can end at sunset, with a night return using head torches. A discovery outing also departs from Bettex. Its sledges carry up to four people, from 2 years old.

Driving your own team

In Megève, you remain a passenger. To take the reins, you must venture further afield, to mushers who teach driving. Teaching the operation of a dog team requires a state diploma, the DEJEPS canine team driving qualification.

  • Alpage de Covetan, at Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe, 3km from Les Saisies: one hour of team driving, including approximately thirty minutes at the reins, and a fleet of sledges for 3 to 7 year-olds.
  • La Giettaz: a state-qualified musher offers the opportunity to depart alone at the helm of a team of three or four dogs, over 5km, provided you are in very good physical condition.
  • Les Contamines-Montjoie: Les Voyageurs de l’Hiver organise raids of one to five days, where each person drives their own Greenlandic sled dog team.

The Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont-Blanc

Every winter since 2005, the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont-Blanc brings together more than 65 mushers and approximately 600 dogs across the roads of Savoie and Haute-Savoie. It has already passed through Megève, with in January 2023 a stage departing from the resort towards Côte 2000. Its 23rd edition will take place from 7 to 19 January 2027; the detail of the stages has not yet been published.

Preparing well

Plan for warm clothing suited to the snow, gloves and waterproof shoes: seated in the sledge, you move little and the cold makes itself felt quickly. Book early during school holidays, and bear in mind that all outings remain subject to snow conditions. In summer, place goes to cani-hiking, a walking excursion paired with a dog, suitable from 6 or 7 years old depending on the operator.

Where to stay

The Mont d’Arbois golf course is at the heart of the neighbourhood of the same name, and the crests are reached via the Rochebrune cable car and the Chamois cabin lift, departing from the village. A chalet at Mont d’Arbois or near the lifts of the centre thus puts the introduction within minutes. For the rest of winter, see our guide Que faire à Megève en hiver, our page on Megève’s ski domain and that on cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The breath of the dogs in the cold air, the hiss of the runners, then hot chocolate on return, cheeks still flushed: twenty minutes that remain among the finest memories of a winter in Megève.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you do husky sledding in Megève?

Evolution 2 offers the introduction at two sites: the crests of the ski area, at the top of the Alpette chairlift or after ascent by cabin lift and a short snowshoe walk, and the Mont d’Arbois golf course. It is the only operator referenced by the tourist office in the resort.

From what age can you do a sledging introduction?

From 2 years old. On the Mont d’Arbois golf course, up to three can travel in the sledge, including one child under 6 years old; on the crests, one or two passengers per sledge, within a limit of 170kg.

How long does an introduction last?

Allow approximately twenty minutes sledging, preceded by about ten minutes meeting the dogs.

Can you drive your own team near Megève?

Do you need a lift pass?

For the crests, yes: a walker’s pass to use the lifts, or your ski pass if you join the activity on skis at the top of the Alpette chairlift. On the Mont d’Arbois golf course, no.

What happens if there is not enough snow?

The crests have guaranteed snow throughout the season according to the operator, unlike the Mont d’Arbois golf course. All outings remain subject to snow conditions.

Can you do husky sledding at sunset?

Yes, on the Saint-Gervais side: the musher Antarctic Road offers from the Croix plateau an outing that ends at sunset facing Mont-Blanc, with a night return using head torches.
