New Year's Eve on the slopes: where to celebrate in the big Alpine resorts

Published on 9 October 2026 7 min read

In the mountains, midnight has a sound of its own: the rush of rockets above the snow front, the echo rolling down the valley, the creak of snow underfoot on the walk back to the chalet. Then comes the first morning of the year, when the pistes groomed overnight wait for the few skiers already up. New Year on the slopes needs planning early. Here is how to choose your week and your resort, resort by resort, with what the tourist offices have already announced.

New Year skiing at a glance

  • Christmas holidays: Saturday 19 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027, for all French school-holiday zones.
  • New Year’s week: Saturday 26 December to Saturday 2 January.
  • Programmes already announced: Val d’Isère, Tignes, Courchevel and Méribel; in Verbier, the celebration takes place on 1 January.
  • Not yet published: Megève, Chamonix, Val Thorens and Zermatt, worth keeping an eye on between now and December.

The week to book before all the others

This winter, the Christmas holidays fall on the same dates for all three mainland school-holiday zones and Corsica: Saturday 19 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027. They cover two full weeks, Christmas week and then New Year’s week, from Saturday 26 December to Saturday 2 January. Leaving on the 2nd still gives you a weekend to get home before everyone goes back. Méribel’s tourist office is blunt about the festive season: “Book your accommodation well ahead”.

Our chalets are generally let Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Sunday, depending on the chalet, usually with a seven-night minimum in high season. For New Year’s Eve, then, it pays to settle on your week early and choose the chalet afterwards: the date decides almost everything else. Our guide to renting a luxury chalet in the mountains sets out each step, from first enquiry to handing over the keys.

Ski areas open for the festive season

The big resorts all open before Christmas, snow permitting: Tignes and Val Thorens from 21 November, Val d’Isère on 28 November, Courchevel on 4 December and Méribel on 5 December. In Megève, the ski area opens partly from the weekend of 5 December and fully on 19 December. In Chamonix, Brévent-Flégère, Les Houches and Balme open on 12 December; at Grands Montets, the summit is once again without a lift this winter. Over the border in Switzerland, the Verbier lift pass is valid from 5 December, and Zermatt announces a season open from 1 November. Our guide to ski resort opening dates gives the dates for the French resorts.

31 December, resort by resort

As of 9 October 2026, four French resorts had already published their programme. Times are as given by the tourist offices and remain subject to change and to the weather.

  • Val d’Isère: from 9pm to 1am, a DJ set on the snow front and fireworks at midnight, at the foot of the Face de Bellevarde. Two days earlier, on 29 December, the instructors put on a torchlight descent followed by another firework display, weather permitting.
  • Tignes: from 10.30pm to 1.30am, on the Lac snow front, a concert, fireworks on the stroke of midnight, then an electro set.
  • Courchevel: a free party on the snow front at Courchevel 1850, from 5pm to 1.30am. During the week, the resort also offers an introduction to eisstock, a light-hearted form of curling, on Monday 28 December.
  • Méribel: on 31 December from 6.30pm, a torchlight descent by the ESF ski school and fireworks at Mottaret, then, on 1 January, an Inuit New Year for families on the piste des Inuits, weather permitting.
  • Verbier: nothing announced in the village on the 31st, but complimentary drinks on the place Centrale on 1 January, from 5pm to 6.30pm. On Wednesday 23 and Wednesday 30 December, the ski schools take strong skiers on a torchlight descent, booking required.

In Megève, Chamonix, Val Thorens and Zermatt, the New Year’s Eve programme was not yet online. Megève runs its Christmas village until 31 December, on the esplanade by the ice rink. Chamonix sets up its own on place du Mont-Blanc, facing the peaks, from 17 December to 3 January, with an open-air ice rink. In Val Thorens, the programme is expected shortly, and Zermatt’s tourist office lists 31 December among its firework evenings. We will update this article as soon as they are published.

New Year’s Eve at the chalet

In a large chalet, New Year’s Eve begins at home: a long table, a fire in the hearth, children watching for midnight from the picture window. The resort celebrations happen down below, on the snow fronts; if you want to walk down for the fireworks and back up again afterwards, choose a chalet close to the centre or to the lower pistes. Our neighbourhood guides to Val d’Isère, Courchevel, Méribel and Megève will help you find the right distance.

Some chalets in our collection come with staff or a chef, while others are entirely self-contained: say which you would like in your first enquiry, as New Year’s week books up quickly. On the evening of the 31st, bring warm clothes for the outdoor festivities, and leave the rockets to the professionals: at Val d’Isère’s New Year’s Eve party, firecrackers and fireworks are banned.

AEC tip. Keep the morning of 1 January for skiing: after the night before, the first tracks on freshly groomed snow have a flavour all their own, and the low January light makes every crystal sparkle.

Where to stay

Our chalets and apartments are grouped by resort: Courchevel, Val d’Isère, Méribel, Megève, Tignes and Chamonix. For the week before, see our guide to Christmas skiing with the family; to compare the big resorts, turn to our guide to luxury ski resorts in France.

The simplest thing is to write to us: tell us your dates and the number of guests, and our agents will send you a selection of chalets available for New Year’s week.

And when the last spark fades above the peaks, what remains is the silence of the snow, and a whole year ahead of you.
