Chevanu Beach in Pianottoli-Caldarello: The Intimate Cove of Far Southern Corsica
Chevanu beach (sometimes spelled Kévano) is one of the most beautiful beaches of far southern Corsica, and one of the most discreet. Located in the municipality of Pianottoli-Caldarello, near the Gulf of Figari, it has the rare quality, for a beach of this calibre, of remaining untroubled by tourism and rarely congested, even in high season.
The layout of the place explains this in part: it is not a long continuous beach, but a bay composed of a principal beach at its far end, framed by several small lateral coves. This geography multiplies the quiet corners; everyone can find their own spot away from the crowds, even when the car park is full.
The setting: luminous sand, maquis, rock
The sand at Chevanu is fine, pale and luminous. The water, as throughout far southern Corsica, is crystalline with exceptional clarity, the seabed visible several metres down. The gradient is gentle, which makes the beach excellent for families with children.
The immediate setting is composed of dense maquis behind the beach and rock formations that sculpt the points of the lateral coves. It is this combination that gives the place its wild character, no ubiquitous beach bars, no heavy development, the maquis touches the sand in places.
Access from Pianottoli
From Figari, take the T40 (formerly N196) in the direction of Ajaccio. At the village of Pianottoli-Caldarello, turn left at the junction (sign “camping”) onto the D122, then turn right towards Kevano. After the campsite, turn right again to access the car park (sign Chevanu).
The final approach is brief: the car park is less than 300 metres from the beach. This is an advantage for families with children or on hot days, no tiring trek required.
Snorkelling and marine life
The waters of Chevanu, its seagrass beds and lateral rocky zones make it a beach particularly rewarding for snorkelling. Several schools of small fish, starfish, occasionally grouper sheltering among the rocks. Bring your own equipment; rentals are not generally available on site.
The lateral rocky zones, more than the central beach, offer the best observations. Move slowly, do not disturb the schools, take nothing away.
Context: far south, Bonifacio twenty minutes away
Pianottoli-Caldarello is about twenty minutes by car from Bonifacio, at the far south of Corsica. The village remains authentic and tranquil, no major resort, no developed seafront, few hotels. For holiday-makers seeking to avoid the bustle of Porto-Vecchio and wanting a quiet base whilst having easy access to Bonifacio, it is a logical choice.
Proximity to the Strait of Bonifacio and, by boat, the Lavezzi Islands rounds out an exceptional activity portfolio for those with a car at their disposal.
When to visit
Like most Corsican beaches, Chevanu fills progressively in July, August, but without reaching the saturation of the legendary beaches. Mornings and late afternoons are the quietest periods. May, June and September remain the best windows, water still at (or already at) 22°C, perfect light, manageable crowds.
