Domaine des Sybelles: skiing five resorts from La Toussuire

Updated on 5 October 2026 5 min read

Guides still describing six resorts and 310km of slopes are describing a domain that no longer exists. Since winter 2025-2026, Saint-Colomban-des-Villards is no longer linked to the Sybelles, and the large Maurienne domain now comprises five resorts: La Toussuire, Le Corbier, Saint-Jean-d’Arves, Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves and Les Bottières. It remains one of the major linked domains in the French Alps, with over 275km of slopes according to France Montagnes, and La Toussuire is its most direct gateway from the valley.

The Sybelles in practice

  • Linked resorts: La Toussuire (1800m), Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves (1600m), Le Corbier (1550m), Saint-Jean-d’Arves (1550m) and Les Bottières (1300m).
  • Altitudes: from 1300m to 2620m, with a central junction at Pointe de l’Ouillon (2431m).
  • Domain: 120 slopes, including 45 blue runs, and some sixty mechanical lifts.
  • Season 2026-2027: from 12 December 2026 to 9 April 2027, according to La Toussuire’s tourist office.
  • Access: motorway A43, exit 27 towards Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, then 17km of road (approximately 25 minutes) to La Toussuire.

Five resorts since winter 2025-2026

The name tells the story: “Sybelles” plays on “six beautiful”, the six resorts united at the inauguration of the domain in December 2003. The links had been built step by step, the first as early as 1975 between Les Bottières and La Toussuire, before the arrival of Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves gave rise to the current ensemble.

The scope narrowed in winter 2025-2026, when the ski link with Saint-Colomban-des-Villards ceased to be maintained. The figures followed suit: where 310km was once cited, France Montagnes now announces over 275km, and the La Toussuire website lists 120 slopes. None of this changes the essential point: you can travel between the five resorts entirely by ski, along the ridges.

Reading the domain from Pointe de l’Ouillon

Everything converges on the Pointe de l’Ouillon, at 2431m. From there you can descend towards Saint-Sorlin, Saint-Jean, Le Corbier or La Toussuire, and it is the landmark to keep in mind to avoid finding yourself on the wrong side at the end of the day. The highest point, at 2620m, is located in the sector of Cime de la Balme, above Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves.

The domain is distinguished above all by its views: the eye reaches from the Glacier de l’Étendard to Mont-Blanc, and the Aiguilles d’Arves shape the horizon of numerous slopes. As for snow, nearly half the surface is equipped with artificial snowmaking. Freestyle enthusiasts have a snowpark of over 4 hectares and a boardercross, whilst the Snowpy Mountain recreational area stretches beneath l’Ouillon.

A domain designed for progression

The Sybelles are particularly suited to families and progressing skiers. The domain offers 45 blue runs, 20 recreational areas and 8 snow gardens. At La Toussuire, the Lutins zone provides two free carpets for first-time skiers, and the snowpark is served by two drag lifts accessible with a single pass.

The range of passes follows the same logic: a Front de Neige pass for beginners, the Sybelles pass for the entire domain and a Tribu pass designed for families and groups.

La Toussuire, gateway to the Sybelles

Perched at 1800m on the Fontcouverte-la-Toussuire commune, the resort hosted its first official ski competition in 1923 and its first lift, the Comborsière drag lift, in 1937. Its name also speaks to cycling enthusiasts: the Tour de France finished a stage there three times, in 2006, 2012 and 2015.

Around the resort, the hamlets of La Rochette, des Anselmes, Fontcouverte, La Bise and Charvin retain their heritage. Off the slopes, winter is experienced by snowmobile, dog sledding, paragliding or snowshoeing, and the L’Igloo cinema rounds out the evenings.

Getting there by train to the foot of the slopes

La Toussuire is easily accessible without a car. Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne station is 17km away, served by direct TGV trains: approximately 2 hours by train from Lyon and 4 hours from Paris. Since winter 2024, certain Frecciarossa trains by Trenitalia are extended at weekends to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne from Paris Gare de Lyon. Once at the station, the S31 coach line runs up to the Sybelles resorts, and taxis and ride-hailing services arrange transfers to your accommodation.

AEC’s advice. Plan your pass around your programme: for a first week of learning, the Front de Neige pass often suffices for the first few days, and the Sybelles pass truly makes sense once you aim for the ridges and the Cime de la Balme sector. On big skiing days, note the closing time of the lifts back to your resort: it is Pointe de l’Ouillon that dictates the route home.

Where to base yourself

La Toussuire brings together two assets: ski access to all five resorts in the domain and a TGV station 17km away. For a stay with family or friends, an apartment or chalet on site allows you to experience the resort at your own pace, between first morning runs and late returns from the ridges. Our selection of chalets and apartments in La Toussuire has been designed with this in mind. To check the state of the domain before departing, the official Sybelles website publishes seasonal information.

From the Aiguilles d’Arves to Mont-Blanc, the Sybelles reveal themselves ridge after ridge: you need only choose your starting point.
